100 Years of Chinese Beauty Standards

As years go by, the ideals of “beauty” evolve. Even in this past century, Western beauty has changed immensely. From thin eyebrows to thick, bushy ones, society’s viewpoint on beauty is quickly transforming. The evolution of Chinese attractiveness is beautifully (pun intended) displayed in the YouTube Channel Cut‘s video:

100 Years of Beauty (China) is part of a Cut Video‘s series. The hyper-lapse look at decades worth of trends demonstrates the ever-changing ideals of beauty. This video, in particular, clearly bespeaks how larger cultural trends have an impact on societal beauty fads. For instance, the video starts off with a look from the 1910s. In this era, middle part bangs were representative of middle-class women.

Cut (pun intended) to the 1950s. At this time, Mao Zedong came to power. As a result, women often opted for a simpler aesthetic. There was a rejection of Western beauty ideals – those of which played a huge role in previous eras (1920-1940).

Remember, there is no “ideal beauty!” Stay true to yourself.

I loved the article and the video clip that went along with it! I didn’t know that beauty had different meanings in different decades. I think it is soo cool that fashion and beauty can change and evolve so quickly. I wonder what the beauty will be like years later from now. What if in the future, people don’t care about beauty and want to have a natural no makeup look? That is what I think it would eventually come to, or maybe even the complete opposite.

This article was very interesting to me. I never really knew about how Chinese beauty standards evolved through time. I have a little bit of an idea of how they are now, but this article gave insight into how the beauty standards have changed. I didn’t know that middle-part bangs indicated a woman was of middle class. This article makes me want to learn more about Chinese beauty standards and how they compare with American beauty standards.

This article was extremely fascinating to me. I have never learned about Chinese beauty standards and that each decade’s style represented something different about what was happening during those specific time periods, such as the 1950’s. Each country has it’s own beauty standard for a certain period of time so it makes me wonder what the other styles were around the world during those time periods.During the 1950’s in China, most women strived for a simple and plain approach, although in America in the 1950’s, the trend for women’s fashion was a more glamorous style. It is very interesting to see how diverse each decade’s style could be. The video clip and pictures were very pleasurable because it gave me a clear representation of each beauty standard and how they each vary from each other.

As a westernized Chinese girl, I have always wondered how different I would look if I were born into a traditional Chinese family. You include a very interesting video in your article that shows the evolution of Chinese beauty standards over the past 10 years!! This is amazing to see how much Chinese standards have changed. This represents the changes in China’s community and society. Honestly, I think that if I were to go to ancient China looking the way I look today, I would get some pretty weird looks!

You include a very interesting video in your article that shows the evolution of Chinese beauty standards over the past 10 years!! This shows how much China has changed and developed as a society as well as a community. I loved this article and video! As a girl who likes fashion and the history behind it, I found this very helpful. It always amazes me how beauty is influenced by the current events happening during the time. I also like seeing how beauty standards in China differ from beauty standards in America. It is also cool seeing the similarities as well. I wonder what’s influencing the beauty standard right now!

thank you for sharing this amazing video!

I found this article to be a very interesting read! It is crazy to see how much change has occurred in beauty trends since 1910. In the U.S., the picture of beauty is often changing, and its cool to see how similar society can behave in two very different parts of the world. The video was a great resource and was perfect for this article. I think it’s important to provide visual support in certain stories, and this video was spot on. Also, I think it was very thought-provoking to read about how beauty trends in China tend to reflect on events happening in that area. This article was very well written and super entertaining. Great job!

This article was very cool to read, Maya! It was interesting to see that some decades, such as the 1930s and 1990s, preferred bangs. The video was very interesting, and I noticed that makeup trends changed over time. Some decades favored bold lipstick, while other decades featured a more natural look. Also, it seems that hair accessories were popular in certain decades, which I find fascinating!

Good job Maya! It was interesting to see the different Chinese beauty standards over the years. Clothing styles and trends were undoubtedly affected by the political climate.! It was amazing comparing the parallels between Eastern and Western beauty standards during the same time period. Clothing styles have such an impact on a society- so it was excellent to see how beauty and society go hand and hand.

The beauty standards are always changing according to internet influences and celebrities, and this articles introduced me to the history of the past on our beauty standards. The interesting changes in the 1930’s because of the influences of foreign culture. Also, the trend of the 1960’s is also a very stunning change that I never expected. I am very interested to see what future fashion is going to look like.

This was a really fascinating article! I had no idea that Chinese beauty standards have changed so much over the years. Right now, you would never see someone wearing certain styles that was the trend a few decades ago! It’s interesting how some years had different makeup, hair, and clothing. The video was also very useful because it showed the beauty standards visually.

This was a very interesting article. I loved the video and the information you gave to us. It was so cool to see all the beauty standards of China in the last 100 years. I didn’t think there would be much of a difference between Chinese beauty and Western beauty. However, thanks to this article I now know some of the differences. From the video, you could tell that the Chinese had a more conservative and simple standard of beauty when compared to other places in the world.

It is so cool to see the way beauty staendards have changed. The hairstyles have definitely changed the most however there are other less noticeable changes as well. In the 1920s through 1940s intense red lipstick seemed to be prefered while less vibrant colors were used in the years following. Another example is skin tone. Throughout most of the century fair skin was preferred while in the 1950s and 1960s tanner skin was more attractive.

What an interesting piece, Maya! The video is so informative. and it’s really cool to see the changes in beauty standards throughout history. I can’t believe people have worn such weird outfits, to today’s standards anyways. It’s so interesting to see a snapshot of various points of time. Great work!

What an article. Even though I know nothing about beauty, this was still very interesting to read. I really loved the picture, because it really gives a great visual as to what beauty was like back then. I watch some old Chinese movies with my mom, and it makes sense. Great article!
