3 Highly Profitable Movies in China

In historical times, theater and drama were always important aspects of entertainment. Likewise, our current society is no different. Some movies have profited very much from Chinese audiences. Three highly profitable movies in China were Furious 7, A Little Red Flower and The Titanic.

  1. Furious 7, released on April 3rd, 2015, fell under the genre of action, adventure, mystery, and thriller. The movie was directed by James Wan, written by Chris Morgan and produced by Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell. Notable characters played by famous actors include Dominic Torreto, played by Vin Diesel, Brian O’Connor, played by Paul Walker, and Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson. In the movie, Dominic Torreto, Brian O’Conner and others defeat an international terrorist called Owen Shaw. After their successful victory, Dominic and the others decided to lead regular lives. However, Deckard Shaw, the brother of Owen Shaw, seeked to avenge Dominic and his crew on behalf of his brother. Later on, a government agent proposed a deal to help Dominic and his crew capture Shaw if they in turn helped to save a kidnapped computer hacker who had developed a powerful spy program. The movie made $390,910,000 in just six weeks during its presence in China! The gross revenue made in China compared higher to that of other countries such as Austria, where the movie only made a gross revenue of $5,557,949. The movie had a worldwide gross of $1,515,047,671, and China made up a large portion of that!

2. A Little Red Flower, recently released on December 31st, 2020, was a story about two families who were diagnosed with cancer and the hardships they endured during the process. The movie was realistic, and it exemplified a theme of caring for loved ones before an unavoidable death. The movie fell under the genre of drama and family, and it was directed and written by Yan Han. Additional writers also included Jinliang Han, Han Li and Jia Jia Wei. The movie also included famous actors such as Jackson Yee and Haocun Liu. The movie made a worldwide gross of $196,900,000, and China contributed $182,800,000 to that grand total! In fact, it only took Chinese audiences 4 weeks to contribute that much money after the movie’s release!

3.The 2012 3D release of The Titanic on April 10th, 2012, was modeled off the real story of the lavish RMS British Steamship which sank after colliding with an iceberg on April 15th, 1912; it commemorated the 100th anniversary of the tragic incident. The movie fell under the genre of romance, history and drama. In the movie, an aristocratic 17 year-old lady called Rose fell in love with Jack, a handsome, but poor artist on the Titanic. The Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ship that was built during the time, so much so that it was considered unbreakable. However, after a collision with an iceberg near the North Atlantic on the morning of April 15th, 1912, the 1,500 passengers aboard all drowned to their death. The movie was written and directed by James Cameron. Famous actors were also involved in the movie, for Leonardo Dicaprio played Jack Dawson, and Katie Winslet played Rose. The movie made a worldwide gross of $343, 550, 770, and $145,000,000 of that total gross was generated in China!

All in all, certain movies were highly profitable in China. These movies include Furious 7, A Little Red Flower, and The 2012 3D release of The Titanic. Each of these movies had unique themes and plotlines, and evidently, they had a great deal of success in engaging Chinese audiences.

I actually really want to see 送你一朵小红花. My mom and I are waiting for it to be released online so we can watch it. Titanic is also one of my all-time favorite movies so I’m glad to see it doing well in China. This article is interesting because I get to see what is popular in China and how American entertainment may influence China. I hope to see more entertainment-related articles in the future!

How interesting! On one hand, this list surprises me and I would go 0/3 if I had to guess before reading, but on the other hand, the picks make total sense when I give it thought.

This article was both informative and interesting! I’m surprised to see more Western films here than Chinese ones, but it makes sense after considering the large hold the West has over the film industry. I remember watching Fast and Furious 7 in the theaters here in America, but it was quite fascinating to learn that a large portion of its worldwide gross was from China. I haven’t seen Titanic before, but I know that it was a huge hit in America when it came out, but it’s pretty interesting to me that these films are just as popular in China. A new name to me, however, is A Little Red Flower; I’ll be sure to check it out! Overall, it was really cool seeing how Western films are just as popular in China as they are in the West, and I hope to see more Chinese films become huge hits in America possibly.

It is very interesting to see how 2 American movies are also highly received in China. I’ve watched Titanic and Furious 7, so I’m interested to see how good 送你一朵小红花. Although it does seem to be very different than the other too. I’d like to see more Chinese movies available in the American Box office, as it would allow for a greater variety of movies to watch. This was a very interesting article. I would like to see what other American movies are popular in Chinese

Great movies! I wasn’t aware the the movie “The Titanic” was really big in China. As I delve deeper in Chinese shows and movies, I will definitely keep “A Little Red Flower” in mind. I have read articles in the past on the rapidly expanding movie market in China. I’m looking forward to more movie related articles in the future!

Great Article!!! These are all amazing movies. I didn’t know that the movie “The Titanic” was that big in China. As I look more in-depth into more Chinese shows and movies, I’m going to keep “A Little Red Flower” in mind. I think it’ll be a really good watch! I’ve read many things about the Chinese Movie Market expanding. I’d love to see more great articles from you in the future!!

Very interesting article. I didn’ expect movies such as Furious 7 and The Titanic to did so well in China, considering they were produced in the United States. I’ts crazy that the revenue from Furious 7 was 1/3 from China, and the revenue from The Titanic was almost half from China. I’ve never heard of A Little Red Flower, but my mom probably has, and I’ll be sure to check it out. I think it’s interesting that it only took four weeks to gross $200,000,000.

Wow what an informative article. I was really surprised that Hollywood movies are box office hits in China. I expected that titanic would be one of the biggest hits there but not Furious 7. I was really surprised at this and it shows that Hollywood movies a very far reach in China and they could fit more relatable movies about China. Again great informative article.

Very interesting! I noticed that two of the movies are American and it’s interesting to learn that in China they are also popular. I will have to see all 3 movies and see if they are good. Thanks for sharing!

This article is very nice. It was cool that these movies that were brought up in America are also very popular in China. I personally only know 2 of these movies and I really liked watching them.

  11. Madison Lee

I think it is interesting to see that some of America’s movies are in this list because I though that they were only a American preference. I have learned that different cultures can have the same popular movies. I would never have though that Furious 7 and the Titanic were popular in China.

  12. Norman Pang

With a huge population of mostly Asian in china, I am surprised that 2 well known American film was on his list. I know a lot of people who lives to watch movies and fast and furious is among their top list, but I have yet to watch it. I only watched titanic before so it would be interesting to see the other 2 on the list.

Wow this is such an interesting and well-written article! It was so interesting to see that there were many Western films on the list. I never would’ve thought that the most profitable movies in China include Furious 7 and Titanic. However, I haven’t heard of A Little Red Flower, but I feel more inclined to watch it due to your brilliant and intriguing description of the plot. Thank you for sharing!
