Breakfast in China!

Obviously, what is typically eaten during meals can differ throughout countries. Growing up as an Asian-American, I was exposed to many different cultures at a very young age. Seeing that breakfast is “the most important meal of the day,” here are some foods that are typically eaten at breakfast in China!

油条,豆浆
油条(youtiao) are deep fried sticks of dough (I know, extremely healthy for breakfast). 豆浆(doujiang) is soybean milk. Soybean milk is slightly sweet and the 油条 is usually oily. The two foods complement each other very well. Though it may not be the healthiest form of breakfast, it’s one of the most popular breakfasts in China.

包子
包子(baozi) are steamed buns that have a variety of tastes. You can fill them with meats, soup, red bean, lotus paste… essentially whatever you would like. They are extremely filling; two are usually enough for one person.

粥(zhou) is rice porridge. When families have leftover rice, they will typically eat porridge, or congee, in the morning. Congee can be topped with “thousand year old egg” (eggs that have been left in soy sauce overnight), bamboo shoots, pickled vegetables, meat, and even peanuts.
