Children’s Day in China!

What comes to mind when you think of the sixth month of the year? Perhaps you think of the start of summer, or maybe even a special holiday to celebrate your father. Before we get too far into the month, let’s talk about a special holiday that takes place on the first day of June—China’s Children’s Day!

Also known as 儿童节 (értóng jié), or 六一国际儿童节 (liù yī guójì értóng jié), Children’s Day is a holiday during which children are the main focus; their childhood and happiness are celebrated, and their rights are emphasized. Children’s Day was formally established in China as a half-day holiday for all elementary schools in 1949 and extended to take place for a full day in 1956. On this day, schools are closed for usual classes and are open to put on children’s shows or sponsor fields trips, movies, and many other activities for children’s enjoyment. Admission to China’s attractions, such as the Forbidden City, is often discounted or free for children and their parents on Children’s Day, and parents often gift their children the newest toys shower their children with love, time, and affection.

In a perfect ending to the month of May and the start of June, the Jericho School District hosted its second annual Family Night on May 31st, on which students in the high school, middle school, and elementary schools and their families were able to have a relaxing night out at local restaurants for discounted prices without having to worry about tests or homework due the next day. Just in time for China’s Children Day, this Family Night event has been a huge success and a wonderful way for children and their families to enjoy a time to bond and unwind.

In the United States, Children’s Day takes place on the second Sunday of June, which is coming up soon! Hopefully, you enjoyed learning about a day during which children are the stars of the show! Let us know in the comments below your thoughts and opinions on this holiday. Until next time!

Nice article! America also has a children’s day, but it isn’t really celebrated as much as Chinas childrens day. I think that having a childrens day is very important, because some parents take their children for granted

Great article! I’ve never heard of Children’s Day, but it sounds like a great holiday celebrating children’s rights. I attended our annual Family Night out with friends, which was a great event that helped relive me of stress from schoolwork. I hope to attend next years Family Night with my own family.

Every country has its own unique day for celebrating the Children’s Day. For China, it’s June 1st. For America, it’s the second Sunday of June. These holidays are necessary considering how children are the ones that should be protected and given special attention and care. It is our responsibility to offer extensive support to the younger generation, as they are the future of our society.

This is a great article! I didn’t know that there was a Children’s Day, and it’s cool to see how important it is in China. It seems like a lot of fun to celebrate. I also think it’s a great idea to implement family night at Jericho, since it’s such a great way to take a break and spend time with family.

I think that it is so cool that China has a holiday celebrating children. I love that schools are closed and tourist attractions are discounted! I think that this holiday is a really good idea and should be implemented here too! I know I would love to have a day off of school! Great article Caroline!

Great article! Children’s day is a very big deal in China, and I think it is a very interesting holiday. It is important to celebrate the happiness and growth of our children because they are the future of our generation. I think it is very cool that Jericho High School had a family night the day before China’s children day. What a coincidence! Thank you for the awesome article. Keep up the great work!

Wow I just realized there was a children’s day in China. I feel like Jericho needs this as well. Relieving stress sometimes would be nice and helpful to your body. I love to see when Chinese people set up these days to benefit the children. Thanks for sharing.

I first heard about Children’s Day in China when I first told my exchange student when my birthday was. My birthday falls exactly on Chinese Children’s Day. I hope that Children’s Day in the United States ends up being a big deal like it is in China.

    最喜欢六一儿童节了。以前在儿童节的时候都能收到糖果和礼物。虽然现在长大了但我还是喜欢儿童节。非常想回到小时候在六一的快乐时光和朋友们一起玩耍。

Great article! I had no idea that there was such thing as Children’s Day in China. I feel that it is important there is a day solely dedicated to children in honor of their childhood, happiness, and having their rights are emphasized. It’s nice to see that the Jericho School District has conducted something similar to this.
