China’s Forest City

According to multiple sources, the human race is predicted to go extinct by 2030 – only twelve years from the date of this article’s publication. As we are in the Earth’s sixth mass extinction era, the fate of the Earth is in our hands. A large factor of this extinction crisis is human pollution, such as air, water, and soil contamination. In an effort to prevent these environmental setbacks, China is creating a  blueprint for a “forest city.”

As China’s huge population expands further, the issue of housing arises. With new constructions come deforestation. This is the main reason Italian architect Stefano Boeri Architetti unveiled new plans for the Liuzhou Forest City in southern China. CNN states that “the 342-acre, self-contained neighborhood will comprise more than 70 buildings — including homes, hospitals, hotels, schools, and offices — all of which will be covered with 40,000 trees and almost a million plants. Eventually, up to 30,000 people could call the Forest City home.”

Furthermore, the Liuzhou Forest City is expected to produce 900 tons of oxygen per year while absorbing 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Additionally, the use of solar panels will allow the city to have sustainable, no-emission energy.

Construction for this futuristic, environmentally-friendly urban metropolis is planned to begin in 2020. Boeri remains optimistic for his project! Hopefully, this initiative will be adopted by other nations around the world.

Edit: If you want to read more about the extinction crisis of 2030, I really recommend watching “Human Extinction By 2030 – The Story of Climate Change.” Though I don’t personally believe this short timeframe will lead to extinction, a lot of evidence points to extinction. For example, multiple scientists, researchers, and diagrams lead to a 0% probability of the arctic ice caps existing in four years.

Great article Maya! Wow, this idea is really cool. It’s a great way to combat deforestation as well as absorb all the carbon dioxide. I hope that other countries like the U.S. will follow China’s example. I hope that this will help prolong the human existence.

I think that this forest city is great. Especially because China is one of the leading pollutors in the whole world. China is really trying to make up for its mistakes in the past. I love green. I hope to see green forests alike all over the world in the future.

As one of the most polluted places in the world, it’s truly amazing to see them taking the biggest steps to try and fix their past. It’s also interesting to see how you do not have to totally eliminate forests to make way for buildings. In fact, you can do a both! I love how China is leading the way and I really hope more countries follow. This is our future and once crazy ideas like these are going to become standard. Thank you for sharing!

Great Article Maya! I really hope this forest city works out. It is amazing to see people try and take steps to stop those environmental setbacks. I really hope that other countries start trying to do the same thing as China. I think that would be a huge step in the right direction. It is amazing to see that things like this forest city are going to be our future. Keep up the great work!

Seeing as China is one of the most polluted places in the world, it’s great that steps are being taken to help reduce pollution and to help restore China’s atmosphere. Incorporating trees into the new city is a very innovative way to help reduce co2, and the installation of solar panels is also helpful. I myself have been to China numerous times, and have seen firsthand the amount of pollution in the air. I hope in the future China will continue to promote a green environment. Thank you for writing about this very prevalent topic!

It’s great that China’s putting effort to make the environment greener. If the city really produces 900 tons of oxygen and absorbs 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide, I think many environmental problems will subside and hopefully, the human race won’t go extinct by 2030. When I go to China, I want to visit this place and see how this city actually works. It seems like a very cool place, though. Great work, Maya!

It’s wonderful to see China moving towards positive resources and environmental betterment. The fact that China has been shrouded with pollution for the past decades and has decided to try to better their lives and protect the world. It is scary to see how much pollution is produced and the predicted human race life span dwindling away so rapidly. Great article!

Cool article Maya! I’ve heard so many things about China’s forest city and it seems China is finally taking initiative. Being able to produce 900 tons of oxygen and absorb 10000 tons of carbon dioxide would help the environment immensely. I hope that by 2030, this city would be finished with construction and I can visit this place. Hopefully, other countries would follow somewhat of a similar idea China is trying to do. This way, we can help save our environment and have a safer future!

I would love to live in a city like this. I bet it would smell nice because there would be trees instead of pollution. This could change the way we think of cities and really help us battle climate change. If all cities followed this plan then we wouldn’t have to worry as much about deforestation and climate change. I also don’t think that the human race will go extinct by 2030, but we will if we continue down this path of environmental destruction.

Interesting article, Maya! I really like the idea of a forest city and I hope it works out. I think its phenomenal that people are taking an initiative to aid these environmental setbacks. It is pretty amazing that a forest city is going to be in our future. I would love to live in a city with no pollution that smells/feels extremely pure. Also, in the beginning of your article you wrote that multiple sources asserts that the human race would become extinct by 2030 – I don’t think that would happen because if we generate new ways to improve our environment, the human race would be long lasting.

Thanks so much for writing this article, Maya! I found this quite interesting to be taking place in such a country as China. With all of the pollution from coal and such in China, many people may think that a “Forest City” might just be impossible. It is crazy to think that this architect will be able to build so many buildings, yet still allow for the ability to have so many plants that help keep the country, and the world cleaner. I find it crazy the amount of oxygen that will be released from this single 342 acre land being that there are going to be many residents of the area, as well as many buildings, cars and other industrial products. I cannot wait to see how this will turn out, and hopefully, should it be built, I will visit it one day. The futuristic design as shown in the picture looks quite remarkable and I can’t wait to see how it will help the world and impact the human races longevity and the survival or future generations!

What a great article Maya! I am incredibly shocked that the human race is said to go extinct by 2030. As we live our everyday lives, we need to be more self-conscious about being more environmentally friendly. I think the idea of a Forest City in China is amazing. I would definitely love to visit! i think more globally changing initiatives need to be adopted such as this one to help better protect and care for our planet. Thank you so much for sharing!

  13. Emily Shi

How can it be that the human race could go extinct in a mere 12 years! Thankfully, China is stepping up to the challenge regarding how we can help preserve our home on Earth. This innovative approach should set an example for other nations. If the rest of the world can follow this, then the world may be recycling millions of tons of carbon dioxide per year. It’s great to know that part of the world is putting forth effort to help save the Earth and its civilians. Great job Maya!

  14. Meghna Satheesh

The idea of a forest city is really fascinating, and considering how severe the pollution in China is, a beneficial one as well. If the plan is implemented successfully, then I hope it can spread to other cities worldwide. I hope that I can go back to China one day, hopefully when the city is completed so I can visit. I’m glad that China is taking large steps to combat pollution and save the environment. Even though climate change is very much real and the planet is in the midst of its sixth mass extinction, I don’t believe that humanity will go extinct by 2030, unless something severely harmful affects the planet. Nevertheless, it was a very interesting article to read, and I hope we see much more news like this in the future,

  15. Beibei Chen

Very interesting article! I really enjoyed reading about the Forest City. I did not knew that the forest city is going to be producing this much oxygen and absorbing a big amount of carbon dioxide, by reading the article it made me felt fresh since I just read the China’s Pollution article. Hopes this will decrease the pollution in China,

  16. Derek Zhang

This could be the solution for Chinese ongoing epidemic—-Pollution. One interesting fact is in the article said Human race is predicted to be extinct in 2030???? I am happy that China is taking the initiative to change our current global problem by introducing trees and plants. The irony is China is one of the most polluted country in the world trying to create this forest city like no other. I hope China will become the leading pioneer in global conservation projects nationally. Trump, DM me 🙂

  17. Jye Shang

This is a really good article. I didn’t know that the forest city was producing so much oxygen and taking in our carbon dioxide. Im glad that china is attempting to get rid of the mass pollution they create. Thanks for sharing this article.

  18. Eric Wang

Wow! What a great article! I like how this article started by stating that the human race is predicted to go extinct by 2030, it really caught my eyeball. That’s also very impressing that the 342-acre, self-contained neighborhood will comprise more than 70 buildings — including homes, hospitals, hotels, schools, and offices — all of which will be covered with 40,000 trees and almost a million plants. That’s really good for the environment for China, because it is expected to produce 900 tons of oxygen per year while absorbing 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide. It could really purify the air a lot, and very eco-friendly! Great article, very informative!

  19. Jeffrey Zhang

Saying that the human race will be extinct by 2030 is a very bold statement. I personally don’t think that is going to happen. However, the new forest city is a cool idea that is being proposed. But how long will it take to complete and will people actually live eco-friendly? I think that it is so cool that more CO2 is going to be absorbed out of the atmosphere. hopefully, many more industrialized nations will adopt a project similar to this.

  20. Nicholas Yum

Great article, Maya! I personally don’t believe the human race will go extinct by 2030. That statement seems unwarranted because even though the world is being heavily strained by human activity, the human population is still growing at an astronomical rate. A catastrophic rapid depletion of the Earth’s resources would be necessary for the mass extinction of the human race. I just don’t see that happening. As for the Forest City, I think this is a great endeavor undertaken by the Chinese to remedy their damage on the environment! Keep up the great work!

  21. Ashley Lu

Great article! It’s crazy that the human race is expected to go extinct by 2030! If the Liuzhou Forest City can produce 900 tons of oxygen per year while absorbing 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide, I think that it will help the environment immensely. I hope to see other countries help to save the environment. I think that its great that China is putting an effort to go greener.

  22. Bill Liu

This article is very great! I think China is absolutely big on taking environmental steps. They are planning to build a forested town, and construction is planned to start in 2 more years. Trees cover all around the area, which means they provide us all of the oxygen we need. They should also build a rainforest/flower garden dome that features an aquarium, birds and even butterflies!

  23. Eric Ma

What an amazing article this is, great job Maya! I never would have thought that the world would end at 2030. That idea seems to be unreal but after reading this article this idea might just turn into reality. I never would expect the Liuzhou Forest City is expected to produce 900 tons of oxygen per year while absorbing 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide. That is just crazy to think about that. I never really thought about what a forest can really do to save the world.

  24. Eric Zhang

    人类灭绝?其实人类很多时候都是在自我毁灭罢了,作者利用这个话题另外的讲述了人类对地球的影响以及破坏,以及写出了之后的方法。

  25. Gloria Cheng

Wow! I can’t believe that I’ve never heard about Forest City in southern China! I’m really relieved to know that this new project will produce 900 tons of oxygen per year while absorbing 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide, which will benefit the Earth! I really think that the United States should do a project like this so we can extend the Earth’s life. Great job!

  26. Richard Ren

Seems like a step in the right direction, but not enough so if we’re screwed by 2030. Hopefully, China and other governments around the world will scramble to make sure that more of these forest cities are built. I think current cities around the world should also be rebuilt as forest cities. I really love the eco-friendly design, energy sustainability, and carbon dioxide intake of this forest city. I just hope that governments will be quick to adapt before a sixth mass extinction reaches us.

  27. Peter Ochalek

This seems like a really interesting concept. While it’s a huge step in the right direction, this one action probably won’t fix the entire earth. The main purpose of this is probably to make an impact while encouraging other nations to do the same. One thing that should probably have been considered is that algae is a much more efficient oxygen producer, but this is still a great concept.

  28. Aaron yeung

WOW this article is great, it is awesome to know china is stepping in the right direction trying to fix or at least trying their best to prevent dramatic climate change and according to this article ‘the extinction of human kind’ The sound of a forest city producing 900 tons of oxygen just bewilders me!

  29. Sabrina Pan

Wonderful article! Although I find it very hard to believe that we may be gone in 12 years, it could happen and the fact that China has made a huge effort to try to improve our environment is very impressing. I hope that the Liuzhou Forest City will not be the only place to try and make a change.

  30. Dennis Chau

Wow wonderful article! It’s very interesting to see that the human beings will be extinct by 2030. But China’s blueprints for the Forest City could be a solution. Hopefully we don’t have to resort to that though. We must improve our environment to reduce the chance of extinction and then we will be safe from extinction.

  31. Grace Zhang

This is a very interesting article! It’s also very informative, and helped me learn many things that I did not know. I think the idea of the Liuzhou Forest City is a very good one, and I sincerely hope that it will be effective. I also hope that others will also follow the footsteps of Architetti to help preserve our race. Thank you for writing this article!

  32. Pratim Chowdhary

Wow this article was very interesting and informative. I can’t believe that some researchers believe the humans are going to go extinct so soon. I hope that this prediction is not true. I also really love the design for the forest city and I hope that one day it becomes I reality. I think that it can really help to save the Earth and hopefully I can live there.

  33. Jillian Davis

Wow! I’ve seen posts about the forest city but I never knew this much about it. It is such a cool concept, and I hope we can construct one here too. the 2030 prediction is scary but maybe projects like this can delay this. At least the construction starts in 2020 so we might be able to see the forest city before we die! hopefully it’ll look at futuristic and sci-fi as I imagine

  34. Catherine Liu

I hope this city’s construction is finished before humanity becomes extinct. Now I actually have a reason to visit China again. The Liuzhou Forest City seems like a cool idea. Great article though.

  35. Leanne Lu

Great article! I didn’t know that the human race is predicted to go extinct by 2030. The Liuzhou Forest City sounds like a great way to try to prevent environmental setbacks such as human pollution. It’s fascinating how this city is planned to contain 70 buildings, 40,000 trees, and almost a million plants. I hope the Liuzhou Forest City will be effective in helping the environment.

  36. Mathew Liang

Interesting Article! I never thought about what the world was going to be like in a couple years.

  37. Hitomi Honda

Really enjoyed this article! Notorious for issues with pollution, I’m relieved to see that china is take the initiative to prevent dramatic climate changes and “the extinction of human kind”.
It will be nice if more industrial countries follow suit and come up with ways to produce hundreds of tons of oxygen per year in order to absorb many thousands tons of carbon dioxide. Thank you Maya for this interesting read!
