Christmas in China

With Christmas just 15 days away, I thought I would write about how Christmas (圣诞节) is celebrated in China!

Christmas has been steadily gaining popularity in China over the past few decades. However, it is not really celebrated religiously in China, but more on a commercial level.

Many people in China that celebrate Christmas by going out with friends, having parties, going out on dates, or just having a good time.  Christmas is also a huge shopping day in China! Many people go out to stores and but many things!

During and around Christmas time, many people also eat apples. This could be because the word for apple in Chinese (苹果) is similar to  Christmas Eve in Chinese (平安夜).

Hopefully, you learned a little about how Christmas is celebrated in China. Until next time, 再见 and 圣诞节快乐!

Before reading this article, I was clueless about the Chinese celebration of Christmas. I assumed that they skipped Christmas since that is not a Chinese Holiday. This is a great topic for this time of the year. Your post was very informative and descriptive, but there is a grammatical error: “Many people go out to stores and but many things!”. The rest of the post looks good, thanks for writing

This is a very unusual tradition! It’s very amazing that the Chinese can adopt this American custom! In one of these pictures, Santa is even coming to China, even though he does not have any reindeer. I think the apples that are eaten during the Christmas season reminds me of candy canes. This article is very informative, but you might want to add a bit more details.

I was in shock about the Chinese celebration of Christmas. I thought that in China the Chinese people would skip it since that was not a Chinese Holiday. And now this is a great time to talk Christmas. Thanks for the information.

Cool article! I never knew western holidays were celebrated in eastern countries like China. I just assumed that New Year’s Eve and Day would be celebrated. It’s funny that their Christmas is like our Thanksgiving (Black Friday) with the shopping. It would be even better if you could include even more information!

wow awesome article i never knew how people celebrated Christmas in china was so similar to how we celebrate it here in the states.
the fact that the similarity of characters was also really cool between apple and Christmas.

This is very similar to how my family celebrates Christmas! It’s a very concise yet clear article about how Chinese families celebrate Christmas. Typically, it’s less of a religious holiday. Most of the time, people just spend time with their family and buy gifts. Since it’s so close to Chinese New Year, it is often blended with Chinese New Year culture in China as well! Great article!

This was a great article! I had no idea that Chinese people eat apples around Christmas time because it sounds similar to Christmas Eve in Chinese. It seems like Christmas in China is celebrated like Christmas in the United States!

This is really informative! I never knew that China celebrates Christmas. And it’s kind of ironic how our way of celebrating Christmas has started to deviate to the commercially-friendly way that China has had. It’s funny how China also has a shopping spree event, just like our Black Friday.

Great article! Christmas is by far my favorite holiday; naturally, I’m inclined to see if those across the globe share my favorite holiday! It’s very interesting to learn that not only do Chinese people also celebrate Christmas, but they also share many of our Christmas pastimes! It’s also very intriguing to learn about the custom of eating apples.

This is so interesting! I am grateful to be able to compare the customs between Americans and the Chinese regarding the celebration of Christmas. I never knew that during and around Christmas time, many people also eat apples, because the word for apple in Chinese (苹果) is similar to Christmas Eve in Chinese (平安夜). Wow! Nice job Jason!

Wow! I hadn’t realized the similarity between the names of apples and Christmas in Chinese! I also hadn’t known that eating apples was a Christmas tradition in China. There seems to be many similar traditions though, like shopping and spending time with family and friends. Good job!

This is a very interesting article! I didn’t know much about how Christmas is celebrated in China. It’s interesting how it’s more of a commercial holiday than a religious one. I had no idea that many people eat apples during Christmas in China. It’s also interesting how this tradition of eating apples may be due to how the Chinese word for apple is similar to Christmas Eve.

Wow, I had no idea that Christmas was even celebrated in China! I thought they only celebrated chinese New Year!`It’s funny that a tradition of eating apples was started by a synonym. I can see that America and China’s Christmasses are different things. Very informative yet fun article!

I had no idea that China celebrated Christmas. it is nice to see that the Chinese people are adapting some American cultures and making Christmas a global holiday. I didn’t know that they ate apples for Christmas.

Perfect timing! I think in America as well Christmas is more of a commercial holiday than religious, so I’m glad people around the world can celebrate and have fun. i Never knew that apples were a Christmas thing in China. Those carved ones look so cute! I wonder what other countries celebrate Christmas.

I had no idea that Christmas in China was celebrated so differently compared to America. In America, it’s celebrated more for religious purposes than in China. I didn’t know that people normally ate apples on Christmas, because the words closely resemble each other. Also, on Christmas, Americans don’t really shop. They normally spend Christmas with their families. I wonder if they also have Christmas trees and exchange Christmas presents. Great article!

This was a very interesting article. I didn’t know that Christmas was celebrated in China. I like the connection between Christmas Eve and apples. It was cool to see the characters on the apples. Thanks for sharing!

Cool article! After reading the article on the Winter Solstice Festival, I wondered if Christmas was also celebrated in China. I was surprised to read that apples were a big tradition during Christmas in China. I wonder if they decorate their houses and exchange presents like in the States. It seems that they celebrate the holiday a little different than we do, but it sounds super fun! Thanks for sharing!

Wow!! I never would have thought that apples would have anything to do with Christmas. When I think of Christmas, apples are never the first thing that comes to mind but it is interesting to know that it is a big thing that is done in China. It is also interesting to know that Christmas is given that much attention in China that they would make a tradition to go along with it. But on a commercial level it is not surprising as media can spread religious traditions and holidays without imposing the beliefs.

This was a great article! I know a lot of my relatives in China celebrate Christmas by going out for a drink or going to a restaurant to have hot pot. Although it’s still not a huge thing in China, I have a feeling it will become more popular. I also never knew that China people ate apples during Christmas. I can’t wait to go to China one day during Christmas time to see the decorations they have. Keep up the good work!

Wow- this is so fascinating. I had no idea that Chinese people only celebrated Christmas on a commercial level. I also had no idea that Chinese people eat apples on Christmas. Although America still associates Christmas with religious overtones, the holiday is becoming increasingly secular in America as well. However, I question whether Americans will ever eat apples on Christmas like the Chinese do. Christmas in China sounds like New Year’s Eve in America. Keep up the good work Jason!

This was a very informative yet enjoyable article on Christmas. I’ve always wondered whether Chinese people celebrated Christmas religiously, but now that question has been put to rest. Typically in America, Christmas is celebrated more religiously with many traditions, so it is a fresh sight to see the Chinese celebrating Christmas commercially for the fun of it. Given that many foods symbolize something in China, it didn’t come to me as a surprise that apples were eaten because their characters were similar to the characters of Christmas Eve. However, in both western and eastern cultures, it seems that a similarity possessed by both is the partaking of heavy shopping on Christmas as well as the gathering of friends and family. These Christmas traditions from both cultures prove that the east and the west are not as different as you’d think.

It was interesting to read about how Chinese people celebrate Christmas. Since they are across the world, it was cool that we all celebrate the same thing. I enjoyed the picture of the people dressed up in Santa costumes! Thank you for sharing this information with us.
