November 17th is the official #PengyouDay in 2016. Today, Project Pengyou Leadership Fellows are promoting and celebrating “US-China study, engagement, and friendship,” as described on the Project Pengyou website, through face-to-face and social media interactions. This year, the project is working together with the US State Department’s International Education Week, Fulbright Program, and US-China Strong Foundation to increase awareness of #PengyouDay and to encourage students of the Chinese language and culture to share their knowledge with peers.

Join in the celebration of #PengyouDay by

(1) posting a picture of yourself with American and Chinese friends on social media with the message, “Happy #PengyouDay #projectpengyou #IEW2016”

(2) teaching any Chinese word to a friend and posting of picture of this interaction onto social media with the caption, “I taught (name of person) (word taught) in Chinese! Happy #PengyouDay #projectpengyou #IEW2016”

(3) having a conversation with someone different from you, teaching them a word in Chinese, and posting about it online with the message, “Happy #PengyouDay #IEW2016

and/or

(4) attending or organizing a #PengyouDay event!

#PengyouDay is such an amazing event and a brilliant method to empower students to take initiative, make new friends, and teach a new language to others. To celebrate today in my AP Chinese class, my fellow classmates and I worked on a project about the unique “pengyou” we have in our class and learned about what makes each of us special individuals, but also indispensable parts of the AP Chinese community.

The Chinese II class in Jericho High School also celebrated #PengyouDay, but in a different way. Instead of completing an in-class project, they did the “Mannequin Challenge” to demonstrate the camaraderie of their class! Check it out here!

I truly hope you will share the news of #PengyouDay with your friends and will practice the act of making new friends and teaching others Chinese words (that you learn from The Daily China!) to close the gap between cultures and advocate mutual understanding and collaboration between Chinese and American communities.

This is really cool that there is a friend day in China, I never knew about it until I saw this article! I hope the message can spread and that everyone will know about this and bring more people together!
