Chinese Honor Society Induction Ceremony!

On October 29th, thirteen of the students in Jericho High School’s Chinese program were inducted into the National Chinese Honor Society (NCHS). The ceremony started off with a speech by Dr. Elaine Margarita, our school’s language director, welcoming the audience and acknowledging all of the inductees’ hard work in their endeavors to becoming a part of the honor society. After, presidents Cole Pergament, Keanna Ghazvini, and Lauren Gold were introduced by NCHS advisor and Chinese teacher, Mrs. Song (宋老师 Sòng lǎoshī), and recalled the past successes of Jericho’s Chinese Honor Society and congratulated the new members. They introduced the poem readers, Caroline Chen and Jack Josephy, to recite the poem “再别康桥” Zài bié kāngqiáo (“Taking Leave of Cambridge Again”) by 徐志摩 (Xú Zhìmó). After bowing, Caroline and Jack introduced Andy Fan to play the song “瑶族舞曲” Yáozú wǔqǔ (“Dance of the Yao Tribe”) on his saxophone. All the performers did an amazing job! The inductees then lighted their candles and repeated after the presidents the oath in Chinese and English:

“我, name of the inductee, 很荣幸成为全美中文荣誉学会的会员。我愿意继续努力学习中文, 了解中国文化, 为世界的和平和繁荣而努力。”

“Wǒ, name of the inductee, hěn róngxìng chéngwéi quánměi zhōngwén róngyù xuéhuì de huìyuán. Wǒ yuànyì jìxù nǔlì xuéxí zhōngwén, liǎojiě zhōngguó wénhuà, wèi shìjiè de hépíng hé fánróng ér nǔlì.”

“I, name of the inductee, am proud to be a member of the National Chinese Honor Society. I am willing to continue to work hard to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture, and be diligent in ensuring peace and prosperity in the world.”

The Chinese part of Induction Night ended with the coming up of the inductees to the stage to receive their formal honor society certificates!

All in all, the NCHS Induction Ceremony progressed flawlessly. Can’t wait for next year’s! 🙂
