Made in China

I’m sure everyone owns something that is made in China. China is the world’s largest manufacturing nation. According to a study performed in 2008, China has at least 1,903,308 factories. From clothes to electronics, some version of almost anything you can think of is made in China.

Two factors that make China a prime market for manufacturing are the world’s lowest wages and manufacturing costs. The cost of living in China is very low compared to western countries like Switzerland, Iceland, and the United States. Therefore, factory owners can maximize profits while also providing acceptable salaries for their workers. China is actually one of the most proactive countries when it comes to pulling its citizens out of poverty.

Along with China’s wealth of resources, it also offers the lowest manufacturing costs in the entire world. From fabrics to electronic components, China has a wide variety of materials to offer at the lowest prices possible. Tech-giant Apple uses its factories in China to produce all its iPhones which is a less expensive alternative to US-based manufacturing.

Like the aforementioned Apple, many of America’s largest companies take their manufacturing process to China to maximize profits on their products.

General Motors
The American motor-giant General Motors is responsible for brands like Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick. It manufactures some of its cars in China and exports them to the United States. Not only does GM dominate the market in the United States, but it also owns a 12.8% market share in China.

Microsoft
Microsoft is an American tech company founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. It garners business all around the world and many global infrastructures rely on Microsoft and its Windows operating system. Microsoft manufactures most of its devices in China. It also holds a 99.3% computer market share in China.

Boeing
Boeing is an American aviation manufacturing company with operations based in Seattle, Washington. In recent years, Boeing has began manufacturing its B737 MAX aircraft at its new China factory. Boeing’s aircraft make up around 52% of the fleets of China’s national airlines.

Chinese manufacturing will soon push China past the United States as the world’s largest economy. By being superior in terms of cost and effectiveness, Chinese factories have perfected the formula of manufacturing. This has piqued the interest of companies all around the world who have began manufacturing in China. China is expected to continue dominating the world’s manufacturing scene for years to come.

I really like this article. I like how you list the different companies. It’s amazing how even GM manufactures its products in China, considering they are american cars. It is easier to manufacture goods in china, because there is less regulation, so it is cheaper to manufacture than in the U.S. China is beginning to regulate the factories, and what they release into the air, so manufacturing prices will go up slightly. Still, it will be cheaper than manufacturing in the U.S. Maybe in the future, it will become cheaper to manufacture goods in American Factories. If we ease up on regulations, we could be #1 again at some time.

This is a great article for many reasons. I learned that China is the worlds largest manufacturing nation. This is due to the fact that they produce things at the lowest cost, and pay their workers low wages. It is insane that many thriving companies in the United States manufacture there things in China. For example, General Motors manufactures some of thier cars in China due to the low price. More companies that produce there things in china are Microsoft and Boeing.

  4. Blake Mayourian

This is a great article. China is the worlds largest manufacturing nation. The reason for that is because they do the factory work for a low price and pay workers low wages. It is crazy how a thriving company in the United states, General Motors, manufactures some cars in China. This shows the great difference in manufacture price between the United States and China. More companies from the United States that manufacture their things in china are Microsoft and Boeing.

This article was very eye widening as I didn’t realize that even larger businesses also make things in China. I also didn’t realize that China had that many factories around its country. I would really hope that in the future that people would stop trying to maximize its profits by abusing China’s low manufacturing costs and move around the world, not only in China.

This article intrigues me. I am a proud proponent of international commerce and trade, and this idea of moving American companies to China confirms a message of cultural diffusion, and the way that our two nations can move forward together. Many Americans believe that most of their products are indeed Chinese made, which is a good thing to build the chemistry between our two nations. At the end of the day, the one thing that we all wish for is a cultural bridge between our two nations, and Nicholas’ article explains this in such a descriptive way.

It’s truly amazing how many different companies manufacture in China. The number of factories there is astounding, it is probably higher now since 2008. They all decide to manufacture there because it is lower in cost and it makes it a prime market. One company I didn’t expect was Boeing and how much it makes up the fleets in China. Great article, very informative!

  9. brandon lorber

It is truly intriguing that china is the largest manufacturing country in the world. It is exciting that chinese manufacturing will be moved to america soon. Boeing surprisingly is making lots of money through the company. I didn’t know that lots of apples bussiness is in china. This is really cool because I thought it was mostly in America.

I have learned so much from this article. I find it amazing how many everyday items and materials are made in China, and this article really emphasizes that point. It is very interesting how many American companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and General Motors are manufactured in China due to its cheap manufacturing costs. I was astonished upon reading that as of 2008 China contained at least 1,903,308 factories. That’s crazy! And by now, I’m sure the number of factories has increased drastically by this year. It is also insane that China will soon have the world’s largest economy due to the manufacturing industry. It is always interesting to read about the world’s changing economy. Really interesting read, thanks!

I am so happy to have learned about the behind the scenes of “made in China.” In the past, I never thought about things that were made in China, but now I have a completely different perspective. It’s so interesting that China has the world’s lowest manufacturing wages and costs. Nevertheless, the workers in the factories can still receive acceptable salaries. I’m so happy to know that China is a country that pulls its citizens out of poverty.

  12. Catherine Liu

The rate of manufacturing and production in China’s companies is amazing. I was surprised to learn that there were so many American companies with factories in China. This drastic growth in China is impressive and will lead them to become the strongest economy in the world. I was aware that China produced many cars in the world, but didn’t know that there are General Motor factories in China. I learned a lot from this article about why China’s manufacturing rates are so fast.

  13. Jillian Davis

I found this article very informational. I’ve seen the phrase “made in China” many times before but I never new the details like this. Just the number of factories in China amazes me. It’s so interesting how China can provide the lowest wages with it still being a livable salary. It’s also cool how a company as big as Microsoft is so prominent in China too. Lastly, I find it very intriguing that China’s manufacturing economy will soon surpass America’s.

  14. mathew liang

I did not realize how many things are actually made in china. It turns out that a lot of technology comes from china. It surprises me because when I visit china I rarely see someone using an i phone or driving a chevy when they are manufactured there. This is a very interesting article and it is very informative

  15. Tiffany Chen

I found it extremely interesting how the wages in China are low, but citizens are getting out of poverty. It’s interesting how the cost of living in China is low, even though it’s so populated. In America, it seems like homes in populated cities cost a lot more than in suburban or rural areas. I also didn’t know that China had almost two million factories. I wonder what most factories specialize in nowadays. Thanks for sharing!

  16. Logan Chang

Nice article Nick! “Made in China” is all over my house: on clothes, appliances, and other common goods. It was interesting to learn about the manufacturing lifestyle for the Chinese. The low wages and manufacturing costs are big reason why China is now an economic powerhouse in the world. I was also unaware that GM, an American motor brand, had the majority of its factories in China. I would’ve thought a brand with such deep American roots would keep its manufacturing domesticated. Anyway, it was great learning about the manufacturing setting in China!

  17. Angel Chang

  18. Rona Cao

  19. Flora qin

This article was amazing! I never knew that the reason for so many things being manufactured in China was because of the low wages and manufacturing costs. It’s also really surprising that so many of these big companies had everything being manufactured in China.

  20. Dylan Swickle

Thanks so much for writing this article, Nick. Of course, I know that a lot of things are manufactured in China; by simply looking at the bottom of a toy or other product, you can easily identify the fact that a product was made in China. I found it quite interesting how not only small products, but as well as big products are produced in China. I did not know before, that Boeing planes have been being manufactured in China; I think that that is remarkable. In addition, although I had a sense of the reasons for why so many products have been and are being manufactured in China, I did not really know about manufacturing costs as a reason for manufacture in China; that is crazy! It is also very interesting to see the effects or low wages on residence in China. China is a densely populated country, and how the cost to live in a city in China is a fraction of the price that it would be to live in a densely populated city such as New York, where apartments, even at the lowest of value, are still extremely expensive. I thoroughly enjoyed your article, Nick!

  21. Dylan Swickle

Thanks so much for presenting this to us, Richard. I think that a part of traveling to new countries and exploring different culture, is also providing gifts and learning about some unique styles within specific culture. Before reading this article, I was not so aware of the different components that went into gift-giving in China; I could have certainly used this when I went to China in October. Something I found especially interesting was the fact that the color of the gift and the gift wrapping is just as important as the physical gift itself. I find it quite interesting how based on the colors that one may present to the person they are providing a gift to, the gift receiver might develop a different vibe from the gift. Such as the use of green, meaning peace, health, and prosperity. A person receiving a gift with these colors may expect something geared toward longevity and health, whereas a person receiving a gift that is wrapped in orange might expect something that might change their life or point of view.

  22. Ria Bhasin

I really enjoyed reading this article. I never knew Apple made there iPhones in China that’s so cool. I was very surprised to read that the cost of living in China is very inexpensive I thought it would be a little pricey. I always wondered why so many companies had factories in China, once I read they had low wages and low manufacturings costs it made a lot more sense.

  23. wilson Dong

    在读这篇文章之前我是真的不知道有这么多东西是中国制造,更不知道中国是最大的制造业国,这也说明了中国的市场有多强大

  24. Douglas Chen

Amazing article! I knew that China had many factories and many goods were made in China but I was suprising by the astonishing amount of fsctories, almost 2 million! I also never knew that China had such a big variety of goods produced there, you can find one version of most things that you can think of being produced in China! Furthermore, I didn’t know that massive companies like apple and Microsoft had factories in China. I never knew that there were so many reasons that China was so ideal for companies.

  25. Jason Li

This was a nice article about China’s factories and how many services it has. I love the amount of detail that goes in China’s efforts to push it citizens out of poverty.

  26. Teran Jafari

This is a very interesting article. I was surprised to find out that Microsoft has a 99.3% of market share in China basically owning all of the China Market share. I do believe that one day China will probably have the best economy in the entire world because of it’s cheap manufacturing costs and it’s global interest for manufacturing much cheaper than anywhere in the world. I also didn’t know that the company Boing is a large sum of China’s national airlines. I also am curious to see if general motors such as Cadillac will ever increase their market share with China in the future. I hope China also finds a way to minimize pollution to the environment because of the constant increasing amount of factories.

  27. Leanne Lu

This article is very informative! I’ve always been interested in how so many of my belongings are labelled to have been made in China. The fact that China has nearly 2 million factories, if not more, is shocking. It’s interesting to learn that Apple makes all of its iPhones in China. I also had no idea China was such a center for getting its citizens out of poverty.

  28. Stephen L.

Before reading this article I knew that China was a manufacturing powerhouse, but the numbers are shocking. I did not know that Microsoft manufactured in China, but the percentage of computers that are made by Microsoft is even more surprising. I agree that China will surpass the U.S.A.’s economy in the near future. As China develops further the lower wages will not be possible anymore and manufacturing could increase in the U.S.A. Great article.

  29. Esther Lin

This article gives a more in-depth view on the little “made in China” signs on everyday items such as clothing. I knew that the majority of things I use on a daily basis were made in China prior to reading this. But I did not know those big companies that need to produce larger items such as Boeing and GM also manufactured their products in China. It is amazing that China has such an efficient manufacturing industry. I’ve always known that wages were low in China and because of that, I assumed there would be a higher average of people in poverty. I didn’t realize how much cheaper the living cost in China is.

  30. Dylan Patel

Though i knew that china was big in manufacturing, it is shocking to see how big they really are involved. There were companies I never knew had factories in china. I didn’t know how low the wages were in china. I am happy to see that the average people in poverty is decreasing.

  31. Harrison Berger

I learned a lot from this article. I learned that china is the biggest manufacturing country in the world! Also I didn’t know some of the huge companies manufactured in china. Some of these companies are microsoft, boeing , and General Motors. I agree that China will pass the US in manufacturing. I believe this will happen in the near future. I think this because china has so many factories and so many people working in them it is so easy cheap manufacturing.

  32. Josh Dong

This article really expanded my knowledge on products made in China. I like how this article gives precise statistics on which company are big in manufacturing in China and what percentage of which market they take up. I now understand why shipping items from China to the U.S is cheap but it takes a long time. A fact that surprised me was that “China is actually one of the most proactive countries when it comes to pulling its citizens out of poverty”. This was pretty surprising to me because I thought that since China had a big population, it would have higher poverty rates and people wouldn’t do much about it. This article was very interesting, keep up the nice work!

  33. Andrew Lee

Though I previously thought that China manufactures a lot of products, I did not really know how much they actually make until I read this article. Another fact that I learned from this article is that China has nearly two million factories. I especially liked the section on the various companies that use factories in China to manufacture their products at a lower cost and higher efficiency. The fact that surprised me the most was that China is the most proactive country for taking its citizens out of poverty. Thanks for the interesting and informative article!

  34. Caroline Gross

This article definitely taught me a lot and was very interesting. I always knew that China flourishes in its economy but I had no idea that it has connections with such powerful American brands such as Apple and Microsoft. I agree that China will exceed the United States so it makes me wonder what America and other countries will do to compete with China. This article intrigues me to learn more about China’s economy and its relations with other companies. Maybe other large companies will decide to manufacture their products in China as well. Did you know that China has lifted over 800 million people out of poverty? China is also the world’s largest exporter of goods. This article was amazing I learned a lot.

  35. Amy Sheen

Whenever I see a product, it is somewhat normal to see a made in China tag or sticker on it. But after reading this article, I was actually surprised by the amount of power and influence that China holds in the manufacturing industry. Since successful brands like Apple and Microsoft actually go to China to make their products, I thought it was interesting. I think that this may be a contributor to all the pollution and waste in China but I am glad that their economy is doing well from the manufacturing. Also, that there are many job opportunities for people in China in factories and companies. Thank you for sharing.

  36. Ryan Lam

This was a really good article idea by Nicholas Yum because everyone I know has many things that are made in China. It was astonishing to learn China has almost 2 million factories. It was interesting to see how China makes it possible to keep low wages and manufacture costs due to low cost of living. It was also cool to see how American countries such as Microsoft have so much involvement with China. This affects me a lot because most of the products I use, even American products are made in China.

  37. Preethi Sridhar

Everytime I buy clothes, cases, pencils, etc., it always say ‘Made In China’ somewhere. After reading this article, I came across some interesting facts on the amount of influence and power China has with its factories. I did not know that China has about 2 million factories! That’s crazy! I was also surprised when I found out that the wages in China are so low, however citizens manage to get out of poverty. Even though the value of living in China is less, its still so populated. Interesting article, thanks for sharing!

  38. gordon wong

I’ve always seen “made in china” on almost all the things I buy but I didn’t really think about it until now. I can’t believe that the wages in China are so low. It does make a lot of sense tho because they have so many workers. I also did not know china had about 2 million factories. That is insane. After reading this article I am a strong believer that China will soon overtake the US as the worlds largest economy.

  39. Richard R

I knew that most companies manufactured many of their things in China, but it’s always interesting to hear the details. I had no idea China had around 2 million factories though. That’s really amazing! China has some of the lowest manufacturing costs in the world. I’m not sure if it’s going to stay that way for long, though, as China is getting a growing middle class as well as cities that are expensive to live in. Great article!

  40. Jeffrey Zhang

1,903,308! That’s a lot of factories. and I’m sure it has just been going up in recent years. With so many workers, it’s a miracle on how they keep their wages so low and profits so high. The “Made in China” is so ubiquitous, it is no wonder that China will surpass the United States in the world economy in the near future. With so many factories it has to come with a drawback. As we know the more factories, the more pollution. Have China addressed this issue?

  41. Jason Mai

made in china常常被用做一句用来调侃廉价制造品的话,但真正的made in china 可不止那些廉价的日常用品,大到飞机,小到芯片,都有made in china,现在的中国制造已经成为了这个世界不可缺少的一部分。

  42. Michael Pecorara

Nicholas, I found your article to be quite fascinating; I like how you dispelled the myth that Chinese workers are being paid slave wages by pointing out that the cost of living in China is lower than in western countries. However, this fact may soon change as real estate prices in Chinese cities are soaring. Also, I like how you showed which American companies were main proponents of offshoring labor costs. Further, It was interesting to see how much market share American brands like GM and Boeing had in the Middle Kingdom. Although I agree with you that China will remain a dominant manufacturing force for decades to come, it will be interesting to see how China responds to Trump’s trade war. Overall, great job!

  43. amy yang

在市场上 买的东西大多都是made in china,中国制造真的很厉害,各个国家大多都需要通过中国的制造厂来制造他们需要的东西, 中国也在不停的进步, 真的看不出来原来中国的制造厂这么多呀。

  44. Juliann Lo

Great article! This article was very informative. I didn’t know that China was the largest manufacturing nation in the world. I can’t believe that even though workers in factories earn really low wages, they can still be pulled out of poverty. I knew many companies had factories in China, but I didn’t know that Boeing had a factory there. I was shocked to find out that Microsoft has 99.3% of computer market share in China. I think China will surpass America with the world’s largest economy in the next 5 years. I can’t wait to witness their growth.

  45. Wesley Wang

First of all, the fact that China has AT LEAST 1,903,308 factories is mind blowing. No wonder China is the world’s largest manufacturing country. Another reason for this is that China has the world’s lowest wages and manufacturing costs. I also find it quite interesting that China is one of the most proactive countries when it comes to pulling its citizens out of poverty. This is because the cost of living in China is very low, and also with so many factories, how can you not find a job?

  46. Jake Moreh

This is a very informative article for many reasons. For example, its crazy too see that although Microsoft is an American company, most of their products are manufactured in China. After reading this article, I have learned that a majority of the products sourced into the United States, even if American by name, are Chinese products. I think this is because the Chinese have less government regulations on the environment and standards in the work place, so it is easier to produce goods at a faster rate in a factory in China than America.

  47. Michael Kim

This is pretty interesting. I’m aware of the amount of manufacturing China does, but almost two million factories is mind boggling. I think it’s crazy how even with such low wages, people can make a living. It’s also cool to see some of the American companies that rely on Chinese factories to produce their goods.

  48. Dennis Chau

Wow, this article is really amazing. I’ve known that most products are made from China, but I never knew that there were 1,903,308 factories in China. Also, I find it interesting that China has the lowest wages and manufacturing costs. It’s surprising that Microsoft holds a 99.3% computer market share in China. This was truly an interesting read.

  49. Eric Ma

Wow, what an article! I knew that most of the products in this world is from China, but I never knew that there were over 1 million factories in China. I also was surprised that China is the lowest minimum wage and manufacturing cost. It was surprising to see a lot of American companies rely on the Chinese factories to produce their goods and products.

  50. Emily Kweit

I think this article is very interesting. I know a lot of goods in America are made in China, but I never knew about how many factories there were in China. I learned that companies in China can make a large profit because the costs of things are lower in China, so the wages can be lower, but still cover living costs. I also learned about many American companies that produce goods in China. These companies include General Motors and Microsoft.

  51. Rui Lang

    中国制造可以最大化利润,很多东西都是中国制造。确实,我买东西的时候经常会看到“中国制造”中国不到两百万的工厂真的是名不虚传,制造了很多我们用的东西。

  52. Ashley Lu

This article was very interesting and very informative. I knew that China was the largest manufacturing nation, but it’s crazy that China has at least 1,903,308 factories. it was very surprising that man American companies rely on Chinese factories to produce their products. I didn’t know that China has the lowest minimum wage and manufacturing cost. It is very surprising that big successful brands have Chinese factories to produce their products.

  53. Sabrina Pan

Amazing article! I have seen many things that have “Made in China” on it to the point where I thought to myself was there anything that isn’t made in china? I think is article is very informative because I learned how many brands we use in America probably are mostly were manufactured in China.

  54. Steven Yu

China is definitely going to surpass the US economically, it is just a matter of time. Even right now, companies like you said such as GM and Boeing are moving their production and business to China. This will be defined in the economics of the 21st, and who is the major political and economic power. China’s efficiency is definitely one of the reasons that the US is moving manufacturing to China.

  55. Kelly Wang

This is a very informative article! I did not know that China was so good with getting their people out of poverty. I thought it’d the be the opposite upon reading that they had some of the lowest wages! But seeing as the cost of living is very low as well, I now understand. China already has a very strong economy, and no doubt their manufacturing scene has made huge contributions to it.

  56. Jason Zheng

1,903,308 factories is a lot. The reasons for China’s success probably has something to do with its manufacturing. Its amazing how the wages are so low but people can live comfortably. China’s manufacturing benefits foreign companies as well. They can keep their expenses down because of cheap labor.

  57. Amy Sheen

Since I have always seen stickers and labels on products that say “Made in China,” it was interesting to read more about it. I didn’t know about the car companies that are actually manufactured in China! Also, things we use in our daily lives like Microsoft programs are actually created in China. That is so cool. Thanks for writing this article.
