Ode to White Rabbit Candy

Yes, I know what you are thinking; what’s with the dramatic title and what’s so special about this dull looking white-Tootsie Roll look-alike? You all know what you’re about to read next and that is why this milky piece of deliciousness is much more than what it seems to me.

I’ve spent a lot of Summer vacations spending time in Shanghai with my grandparents and although I’ve had less and less time to go visit, I always look forward to when I have the opportunity to do so. Whenever I enter the apartment, there’s always a jar of candy lying undetected on a table filled to the brim with these White Rabbit Creamy Candies. Ever since my very first taste, these pellets of sweetness have always nurtured my sweet tooth and love for the vanilla flavor. It is coated with a translucent layer that instantly melts in your mouth and the chewy core always leaves a desire for more. To me, these are one of those foods that everyone should try at least once.

In addition, these can be found at almost any Chinese supermarket, marketplace, or even at shops located near tourist attractions. I guarantee that if you have been to China, you have probably seen one of these before. Not a fan of vanilla? These also come in flavors like chocolate, coffee, toffee, peanut, maize, coconut, lychee, strawberry, mango, red bean, yogurt, matcha, fruit, butter-plum, and much more.

Throughout the years, my sweet-tooth has slowly diminished but these milky candies are still a must-have every time I visit.

Great article! I never really liked eating candies, but this is the only candy I actually like to eat. I remember when my brother and I tried this candy when we were little. We thought it was so strange that the translucent layer was safe to eat because it looks like plastic. Now I know that the translucent layer is actually made of glutinous rice flour. Eating this candy makes me feel very nostalgic!

Interesting article! I always liked eating white rabbit candy as well. I was uncertain at first because it thought it looked weird but when I tried it out it was surprisingly good! This article was a great read because it helped show that certain candies are sometimes different than you expect it to be. I also did not know that they had different flavors! I only knew about the original flavor and have only eaten that without realizing that there were other flavors of the same type of candy that I enjoy to eat.

This is a very interesting article. For me I have never tasted white rabbit candy. This article is one that shows hat certain things are different then expected. I did not know that they had different flavors, I thought they only had one. I also find it interesting that the translucent layer was safe to eat, I always thought it was plastic.

I really like this article. I’ve loved eating this candy as long as I can remember. However, I only had the vanilla flavored one. I really wish I can try the other flavors. I can remember going into my grandparent’s house and eating the whole bag because the candies were so good. This article was very nastolgic.

Nice article, Larry! In my last days staying in China, my host student gave me two bags of white rabbit candy, which I was ecstatic about, as I really liked them. When I brought the candy home to my family, they loved it! I never knew that there were different flavors, however. It’s also interesting to know that this candy’s translucent casing is edible, which I was never really sure about. I liked how you mentioned the personal connection to this candy and turned into an informative article.

Great article Larry! 大白兔 is by far one of my favorite Chinese candies. When I was younger, I would always try to peel off the translucent rice paper- only learning from my dad years later that in fact, the paper was edible! I never knew that 大白兔 comes in a variety of flavors as I have only tried the classic vanilla flavor. Hopefully, I’ll be able to try the other flavors!

This is a very interesting article. I also love to eat these white rabbit candy. I am only upset that I can’t have more delicious candy. I like the sweet flavor and the chewy texture of it. I don’t know if they have other flavors, but I want to try it if they do.

I really like this article because I can relate to it. I had white rabbit candy for the first time this summer and it’s my favorite Chinese candy. I brought a bag back to share with the rest of my family. I think this candy is cool because you can eat the inside paper. I didn’t know that there are multiple flavors of white rabbit.

This was a very interesting and informative article. White Rabbit candy is one of my favorites, even though I don’t like the chewy consistency/texture to it. I also never knew that you could eat the clear coating on the candy, and I always threw it out. I like how you added a visual image of the candy, so that readers can better understand the resemblance of this candy to a tootsie roll. Before reading this, I also never knew that there are other flavors beside vanilla. I particularly want to try the mango and red bean flavors. I’ll be sure to look for the other flavors of the candy the next time I go to a Chinese supermarket!

I remember when I was young and my grandparents would always give this to me! This article was very descriptive, up to the point of drooling. I can almost feel the taste of this candy in my mouth right now. Unfortunately, I haven’t had this in a few months. I never knew there were more flavors than vanilla, and I know it will be interesting to try the other flavors. I agree that everyone should try this candy at least once, even though it might look bland. I would like to try coffee and red bean someday!

It’s nice to learn that I’m not the only one who loves White Rabbit candy! Also it’s interesting to note that the white translucent layer mentioned in your article is actually made up of sticky rice. I also do agree that White Rabbit candy is one of the foods that everyone should try at least once. Even though I’ve had chocolate, and mango flavored White Rabbit candy, I didn’t know that there were so many more! Now I really want to go back to Shanghai and try them all!

Even though the title was very dramatic, I still love white rabbit candy. Yet I never knew they sold these candies at common supermarkets. I was also surprised they sold them in different flavors! But I did know the candies had a layer of film on it but I don’t know what it is. After reading this article, I’m deciding to go out and buy more.

Wow, I never knew there were so many flavors of these candies. I’ve only tried the vanilla flavor, but I would love to try the others. Flavors like butter-plum, maize, and red bean don’t sound as appealing as mango, coffee, and strawberry. The translucent layer feels disgusting to me, so I always try to take it off. Everyone should try these candies. Thanks for sharing!

Very interesting article and I like your style and dedication about writing an article about white rabbit candy. Ever since one of my parents introduced me to these candies I never stopped liking them. It is very interesting that the rabbit candy comes in different flavors in China and are obtainable at any Chinese supermarket. I thought they only came in vanilla flavor. Well, guess I should fly to China to get them because, in my opinion, they are that good. The first time I put it in my mouth it had the hardness of a jolly rancher but the milkiness of white chocolate. Just the way I like it. One big mistake I made I thought the layer on the outside was plastic (BIG MISTAKE). I can see why you have a lot of nostalgia for this sweet candy product. Overall, a very good article on something almost everybody knows and loves. Great work!

It’s really cool how candy can represent so much in your life with your grandparents and visits to Shanghai. I’ve had them many times before and always found the translucent part to be fascinating. I never knew it was vanilla flavored; it tastes only like milk to me. I also didn’t know that there were other flavors. I would love to try the lychee and strawberry flavors. Thanks for sharing!

I love White Rabbit candy! I think the first time I had them was in sixth grade Chinese class. I haven’t seen them around in Chinese supermarkets, but I might just have to look harder. I also hadn’t known that there were other flavors of this candy! Halloween is coming up — I’d totally give up my Skittles for these.

  19. Jillian Davis

Ha! Personally, I think the title is perfectly valid! I actually got a big bag of white rabbit candies from H-Mart after getting these in Chinese class. Just reading these makes me want them again. In America, candy is all very extreme in flavor, so I like the simpleness of these. Hopefully the next time I have an opportunity I can get some more.

It’s nice to see an article about China that talks about something other than pollution. I didn’t know that these white rabbit candies come in so many different flavors. Are the other flavors such as coffee still white like their name suggests? This article has made me start craving them again.

Great article! I’ve eaten white rabbit candies before, and I’ve always enjoyed them. The outer edible paper layering that melts in your mouth has always intrigued me. I had no idea there were so many different flavors. I’d love to try a flavor other than vanilla sometime.

  22. Jason Suh

Great article Larry. It’s so great how you have a favorite candy that sort of symbolizes your childhood. I have actually tried white rabbit candy and it is delicious! It really has such a creamy outer coating and a soft chewy middle. It really does melt in your mouth! I would love to try the red bean flavor and the matcha flavor. It’s so great that you have such a sweet childhood memory of eating this delicious candy at your grandparents house. When I was growing up, my grandparents always used to have these really bad caramels at their house. They were really bad. But like you, I have had positive experiences because they also oftentimes had Hi-chew candies. Thanks for sharing!

Great article, Larry! I always loved these white rabbit candies, but I never knew the different flavors they came in! It really has a amazing, chewy texture, and the edible paper that surrounds the candy in the packaging is a nice touch! It brings fond memories of my dad telling me the paper was edible and me not believing him. I haven’t had the candy in a few months, but reading this article makes me want to chew some right now!

  24. Grace Zhang

Great article! I’ve seen this candy around many times when I went to China, but I never really tasted it before. By reading your article, I made a note to myself to try it when I see it again! This picture makes me longing to eat one. Thank you for writing this article!

  25. Steven Yu

I have only had this candy a few times and I like it. I did not know that it came in so many different types of flavors. This candy taste like a white tootsie roll that has Asian flavors within.

Wow, I really enjoyed this article. When i was younger, my grandmother would always offer this white rabbit candy to me, and I would always be ecstatic while eating this tasty treats. After reading this article, I now know that these candies come in many different flavors. Larry Ding that the flavor that this candy come in are chocolate, coffee, toffee, peanut, maize, coconut, lychee, strawberry, mango, red bean, yogurt, matcha, fruit, butter-plum, and much more. The matcha flavor seems the most appetizing. However, I do not think that butter-plum or chocolate sound that good.

Wow, this is such an informative article, I will be sure to show this article to my parents. I also hope that I get the chance to study at one of these schools. I liked how you compared these schools to Ivy League colleges in the United States, that was very helpful. I never knew that there were nine main colleges that were known as “the most prestigious” colleges in China. If I had to make a choice, I think I would like to study at Peking University, it sounds the most appealing.

  28. Eric Ma

Wow! I really like White Rabbit candy. I didn’t even know that there were different types of flavors for this delicious candy. Hopefully one day I will be able to try the different type of candies. This is going to be on my bucket list to find the different flavors for white rabbit.

  29. Andy Jiang

Cool article! I definitely can attest to the contrast the White Rabbit candy’s meek appearance and delicious flavor! The edible paper is a clever idea! I was unaware of these candies coming in such a varied array of flavors; I am sure to try as many as I can!

This article was very informative. I love white rabbit candy and try to eat it whenever I can. I also didn’t know that there were other flavors of it besides vanilla. This article makes me want to try the other flavors of the candy as well. I hope that one day I can go to China and try some of the authentic candy. Great article Larry Ding!

  31. Michael Kim

Interesting article Larry! I’ve tried these candies before and they definitely are how you describe them. I didn’t know they came in such a large variety of flavors though.

Wow! This is such a childhood food I love the rice paper melting in my mouth and its just so tasty.! Everytime this reminds me of my childhood and I think about my past. I really love these sweet candies but only tried the original. However, I will never forget these as I had this tasty delight a couple days ago. Awesome article!
