Sharing the Heart Signal

Believe it or not, renowned dating shows such as The Bachelor and Love is Blind are not only exclusive to American entertainment. A dating show called Heart Signal is currently taking China by storm with its unique concept. As well as highlighting the obstacles that contestants may face, it also outstandingly portrays the butterfly-like feelings that may arise when finding love for the first time. Based on the South Korean reality show of the same name, which can be found on Rakuten Viki and YouTube, Heart Signal features eight strangers from different Chinese cities who desire to find a romantic partner. The cast members all live in one house, in which their daily interactions are filmed for the audience.  However, they are initially unaware of each other’s age and occupation, so they must rely on their personality and charms to attract their love interests.

Throughout their day-to-day lives, dates, and group gatherings, the smell of romance wafts through the air. At the end of each day, the participants send a “heart signal” to an individual they believe could be their prospective partner. These anonymous text messages, usually state something simple, such as how the date was fun, creating suspense, as the cast members need to carefully consider to whom they will send their heart signal, while they desperately hope for reciprocation.

Although the nature of the interactions create drama, the panel of hosts serves as voices to express the audience’s reactions. Included on the panel of the Heart Signal 2 are actress Victoria Song, actress Rainie Yang, actor Zheng Kai, Rocket Girls 101’s Yang Chaoyue, actor and television host Du Hai Tao, and writer and host Liu Xuan. The panel’s remarks and jokes aid the audience in gaining a connection with the contestants and provide insight regarding the intentions of the couples on-screen.

At the end of each season, the cast members reflect on the fond memories they made with each other and discuss the genuine feelings they have developed for each other. In dramatic scenes at the end of the show, the participants make a phone call to the person that they desire to be with and confess their romantic feelings. If two people decide to become a couple, the goal of the show is satisfied!

Overall, the show captures both feelings of excitement and disappointment on the journey of meeting charming strangers, developing friendships, and finding love, which is exactly why the Chinese audience, as well as others from around the world have ecstatically absorbed all five seasons.
