Some of the Most Popular Dim Sum Dishes

Growing up in a Cantonese household, I have frequently gone to dim sum restaurants and have tried a variety of the dishes. I wanted to learn about the most popular ones, so I did some research!

Crystal Shrimp Dumplings (虾饺)

This is pronounced as har gow in Cantonese, and is a chewy, translucent flour wrapper folded and stuffed with minced shrimp, and sometimes pork and bamboo shoots.

Barbeque Pork Buns (叉烧包)

These pork buns come in two options: either soft, steamed buns or honey-glazed baked buns. Both taste delicious, with the same tangy barbecue pork in the middle. These are called char siu bao in Cantonese.

Shumai (烧卖)

Shumai is an open-faced dumpling filled with pork and shrimp, and wrapped in a wonton wrapper. It is steamed and sometimes topped with fish roe.

Rice Noodle Rolls (肠粉)

Cheung fun is a steamed and smooth rice noodle often filled with shrimp, beef, or vegetables. This dish is usually drizzled with sweet soy sauce to finish it off.

Turnip Cake (萝卜糕)

Called lo bak go in Cantonese, turnip cake is a pan-fried piece of rice flour and white radish, sometimes also with meat or other vegetables. This dish is crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. Turnip cake is often eaten on Lunar New Year, as its pronunciation is similar to good luck in Chinese.

Egg Tart (蛋挞)

Egg tart is a popular Cantonese dessert served at dim sum restaurants. The creamy custard consists of sugar, eggs, and vanilla, and is put into a crispy outer crust.
