The Dumpling Experience

Everyone loves a dumpling but, some people don’t, like me, know how to make them. Today you’ll see me attempt to cook dumplings for the first time.

I followed this super simple recipe:

  • One quarter cabbage
  • Approximately one pound of chicken
  • 3-4 Green Onions
  • 1 Package of Square Dumpling Wrapper (preferably circle ones)
  • Soy Sauce

Hopefully, you enjoy watching it as much I had fun making it. 再见!!!

Dang! I never knew this side of you, Jeff! Those dumplings look delicious, and now I’m craving them too!

  2. Daniel Yeh

Those dumplings look good. I don’t really like dumplings so that’s saying something. I did like the creation process but would change the green onions to something else. As a personal preference.

  3. Oscar Yan

Your video was great! I also really enjoy dumplings. I don’t know how to make them either. This video really helped me. I can’t wait to make my own!

  4. Nicholas Yum

Wow, Jeff! I never knew you are such a great cook! Those dumplings look awesome for your first try and I know you’ll just keep getting better with each video you make! With your cooking show and the Foodie Five it’s almost like we’re starting a food blog! This was an great idea and I can’t wait to see more! Welcome to The Daily China!

  5. Dillon Jia

Great video Jeff! I love dumplings, and I too cannot make them. This video also helped me in knowing how to make dumplings. Keep up the great work!

  6. Tiffany Chen

It was nice to see that you were craving dumplings and took the initiative to make them yourself. I’ve never made dumplings before, but I’ve watched my grandparents and parents make them. It’s quite a difficult task! The dumplings you made looked really good though. Thanks for teaching us how to make them! Great job!

  7. Wesley Pergament

What an amazing job! Your combination of humor and interest in cooking has created a wonderfully informative and entertaining video. You also made the process seem really easy and now I want to make some dumplings! Additionally, I loved the part about Confucius’ teachings. It definitely added in a little spice to the video. Thank you for sharing and I hope to see more of these creative videos soon!

Great video! I like how simple it was to create dumplings, yet still turn out amazing. I myself have made dumplings with my mom a couple of times and loved them. It’s also great to see so many people trying out new Asian cuisine, such as dumplings. I hope I make them again sometime, and will remember this video. Thank you!

  9. Pritesh Patel

Amazing video Jeff! To be honest, I never saw this video coming. Those dumplings that you made started to make me crave dumplings. I honestly couldn’t stop laughing at your humor in this video. I never would have tried making dumplings at home. I would have just gone to Orient if I really wanted some. You made it look pretty easy too. I might just have to try making them at home as well.

  10. Michael Lin

Wow this video was so great. Dumplings have been a traditional food that I have grown up with, I used to spend weekends making dumpling with my grandma and mom. The steps you gave are simple and easy and I can’t wait to try this recipe. Great article!

Amazing video, Jeff! I love dumplings too, but I never really know how to make them. I’m usually the one eating the dumplings. My mom tried teaching me last summer and I thought it would be really easy. All you have to do is to put the meat inside and seal it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as easy as I expected. There are actually many steps to make a good dumpling, and I really want learn it.

What an amazing video! I never thought I would watch a cooking video on this webiste so I suggest you make more haha. I love how you took the time and effort to make a video and learn how to make dumplings! I like how you added a sense of humor with a little touch of Confucius’ teachings. The video was very entertaining and I hope to see more of your cooking videos.

Thanks for this amazing video, Jeff. It was really interesting, and a bit comical to hear how you only decided to make dumplings out of laziness to go buy some at a restaurant. Although, I must say, the results seem to have come out amazingly. I like how you gave the viewers a comprehensive step by step outline on how to make the dumplings, and showing us how you did every step. I remember making dumplings with my host family, and the entire time they were laughing at me because I could not get the fold correctly; the grandmother hit me with her chopsticks once because I could not get the dumpling to close! I loved watching this video as it gives us the perspective of someone who isn’t Chinese and their experience with making dumplings! Thanks so much, Jeff!

  14. Jason Suh

Wow this was such a great video Jeff! I can’t believe you made dumplings! They look delicious! I would love to try them! When I was younger, I would also help my grandmother make dumplings as well!

  15. hao kun liu

wow, thats really impressive, credits to you. I never went through the full experience of making dumpling, sometimes i would just help out my mom to to the whole flour part, maybe because i dont have that much patience. Anyway hope u had fun doing it.

  16. Emily Shi

Great video Jeff! You’re definitely not lazy if you’re going to take the time to make and cook the dumplings. That takes a lot more effort. These results look amazing, especially for a first time. I should give them a try too~ I hope you make more videos of you being “lazy” and making other Chinese dishes.

  18. Derek Zhang

Jeff interesting video. I like the way you interact with your viewers. Your step by step tutorial made like easy and lure me in making dumplings. I hope you could start a cooking blog on Daily Chinese. Three different price chinese cuisines and which is worth it at its price. If you need another man. Hit me up, always available for collab #dreamcometrue

  19. Jye Shang

Jeff that was a great video. I never really made any dumplings before but rather watched my mom make them. I would now love to make them myself with my family. This is a big part of the Chinese culture and i should be a part of it. Thank you for sharing the video.

  20. Jeffrey Zhang

Wow. This was pretty entertaining to watch. I loved the enthusiasm, but most of all the quote from Confucius. This process is very simple and I’m sure anyone can make it, besides it’s cheaper than buying from restaurants. Maybe one day you can make dumplings for me!

  21. Stephen Liang

Your dumplings turned out great. Even though my family is Chinese, no one knows how to make dumplings. The only time we eat dumplings is when we go to a restaurant or when we go to my grandma’s house. I will have to try out this recipe soon. Great job on the video and thanks fo

This article was very entertaining. I knew that dumplings were an essential part of Chinese culture, but I never knew how they were made. I didn’t know that it was so hard to make dumplings themselves. If I was in the role of the chef I would have never gotten even close to finishing the dumplings. Also those dumplings look really good!

  22. Bill Liu

By these steps and processes, making dumplings is very simple! The ones used here is chicken, but other types of ingredients can be used. My favorite ones are shrimp and pork. My dad and I usually buy dumplings at the market when they are frozen. I wish that there are ones that are made with fruit!

  23. Eric Ma

Dang bro! Give me some of those. If you need help with your dumplings hit me up and I can help you. My parents are known for their dumplings when were are at parties. My family usually make dumplings like twice every 6 months so not as often as I want but enough for me to stop complaining all the time.

  24. Gloria Cheng

Wow, I relate so much! I also love dumplings but am not that great at making them! I’ll be sure to try out this recipe! The dumplings you made look so good! Thanks so much for sharing about your experience making this authentic Chinese dish.

  25. Nico Li

Those dumplings look great! I know a few people that doesn’t like dumplings- I don’t really know why, but dumplings taste great to me. Great video, good job!

  26. Rui Lang

    我经常看到我家里的长辈做饺子,尤其是过年的时候,凌晨他们都会做饺子。其实我不是很喜欢吃饺子,所以我们家做饺子的次数就越来越少。但是你做的还是很好的!加油!

  27. Richard Ren

Great video! You outlined your experiences making dumplings well! They can be hard if you’re initially starting out, but it’s easy to get the hang of it. I love experimenting with foods of different cultures! Your dumplings turned out great, and I wish you the best of luck on future recipes!

  28. Steven Yu

For a first timer those look pretty good.. Better than the ones that I can make. Dumplings are probably one of my favorite foods. Keep it up and I look forwards to watching you make different recipes in the future!

  29. Peter Ochalek

Wait, Jeff, you can make dumplings?!?! Ok that’s really cool and way better than I can do. Well at least now I know how to make dumplings. I wonder how difficult this was to learn, but I commend you for learning all of that. Hopefully you can learn other interesting food recipes, and maybe even bring some dumplings to school one day.

  30. Mathew Liang

Very Nicely made video! Even though my family is Chinese, no one knows how to make dumplings. My family usually gets frozen dumplings from H-mart to save time but it is so cool that you can make dumplings. I also sometimes get dumplings from my grandma because she has a lot of spare time but since I don’t know how to make them myself, I rarely get to eat a good quality dumpling. Thanks for sharing your experience and I will definitely try this recipe out

  31. Aaron yeung

aye, awesome job Jeff! the video was really fun watching and i actually learned a thing or two! i guess i can finally make proper hand made dumplings instead of steaming made ones! i also really enjoyed how you included the ingredients just in case we would like to make them ourselves!

  32. Dennis Chau

Nice article Jeff! it’s amazing to see that for such a simple recipe you can make such an amazing dish that tastes amazing. After watching the video I learned a couple of things about how to properly make hand made dumplings. I’m just used to steaming pre-made dumplings but now I’m gonna make some hand made ones.

  33. Grace Zhang

I’m impressed with your video! In the past, I ate dumplings many times. It became one of my regular meals and one of my favorite foods. However, instead of making it on my own, I would always buy the premade frozen ones at the stores. When I watched your video, it made me want to try making them from scratch. Thank you for this video!

  34. Stephanie Cen

This video was so funny! I like your witty humor and video editing skills! It really adds to the viewer experience! I am so happy that you were able to experience this for the first time! I believe that everyone should have the chance to experience the making of dumplings because it is so fun. It is really worthwhile to eat your own creation rather than something you guy at a resturant. I hope that you will continue to learn about cooking and chinese culture! I loved this video and I hope you can make more like this in the future!

  35. Beibei Chen

I love this video! I like how you mentioned Confucius’ quotes. This video is funny, I like your steps, it’s very logical. I love dumplings, my mom always make them for me. My favorite stuffing is shrimp. The dumplings you made looks delicious, it’s good since it was the first time making a dumpling. I can’t even make the stuffings and stick the dumpling skin together when I was making them the first time, haha. Anyways, I like how the dumplings came out, it’s very nice.

  37. Mackenzie S.

Really cool video! I liked that you brought humor into a recipe video as it really added to the effect it had. I am a huge dumpling fan so I would love to try this out at home. You made it look so simple and easy! The dumplings looked great and they made me hungry while watching. I also love to cook, so I will definitely try to make these at home! My family tends to buy premade frozen dumplings, but I believe that everything is better homemade! I hope to see more videos like these in the future! Thanks so much for sharing!

  38. Morgan Park

Wow, cool video! I eat dumplings all the time, but my parents always make them for me. I think I will try to make them myself next time because of this video. I like how you included every step in detail. I also liked how you recorded each process to show us. Thank you for sharing!

  39. Joshua Cheuk

Wow! I really enjoyed the video. Usually, my parents would buy and cook frozen dumplings from the supermarket. Also, the ingredients to make the dumplings were provided in the video and in the description. The details given to make the dumplings were very specific. Furthermore, your video showed and explained the steps to make the dumplings. Now, I think I can make my own dumplings!

  40. Jasmine Chen

Interesting video, Jeff! It’s amazing that you made homemade dumplings from scratch! It really surprised me when you poured water over the dumplings. I never knew that was a part of the dumpling-making process. You made it look so easy! I loved how you brought humor into the video. I hope to see more of these videos in the future. Thanks for sharing!

  41. Ryan Lam

I really liked this fun video. My parents usually just cook frozen dumplings that they bought. Only my grandparents know how to actually make them from scratch. Dumplings are one of my favorite Chinese foods. I’m glad you poured the water around them because the first time I tried to make my own, I forgot that step, and it turned out horribly. I will probably practice with your ingredients because I used different ones.

  42. Jason Zheng

This video is great! I love dumplings and eat them often. I have tried making dumplings and they did not come out as good as yours. I might try making my own again. Keep up the great work.

  43. Renee Lin

This is a great original video. Its great how you took it upon yourself to make your own dumplings. I remember trying to make them as a kid and it is not an easy task. However yours seems to have come out quite well. This was a great educational video and i look forward to watching more.

  44. Blake Mayourian

This is a great and informative video. I am impressed by he looks of your dumplings because not many people know how to make them. Your humor made the video very interesting. I liked how you recorded each process of making dumplings. Overall, this was a very well made video, keep up the good work.

  45. Brandon Wong

This video was good homemade video on how to make dumplings! Before this, I had never knew how to make dumplings. Also, I liked how you filmed and edited the video. Thanks to this, I can make my own steamed dumplings at home! I also liked ho you also pointed out your mistakes so that someone watching would not make the same mistake. Great job!

  46. Ethan Wang

I really enjoyed this video. It teaches viewers how to make dumplings on their own. Your humor made it much better. Your dumplings look very good. I hope i can make some at home

  47. Esther Lin

Whoa, this video was so cool! I loved the simple recipe and easy to follow steps and instructions. Dumplings/ wontons and instant ramen are probably the only things I know how to make. They’re not easy to make well but your dumpling looked really good! Homemade dumplings always taste ten times better than frozen store-bought ones. Kudos to you for taking the time to make your own dumplings.
