Tips to Improve Your Chinese

Do you want to improve your Chinese? I do. Although I fluently spoke Chinese at three years old, I eventually lost it all after I learned English. Currently, I strive to relearn this language. Here are some tips that are proven to help improve your Chinese.

Watching Chinese Dramas

Now you finally have an excuse to watch TV! Through watching Chinese movies and TV shows, you can be exposed to common phrases and language. I can personally attest to the benefits of watching content in Chinese. My mother grew up in Hong Kong and never spoke a word of Mandarin. Even in her early 20s, she was able to learn the nuances of Mandarin by watching Chinese shows.

Do 听写

听写 directly translates to “listen” and “write”. Devoting a mere 5 minutes of listening and writing to Chinese a day is a sure-fire way to progress your Chinese. It is easy to be passive when learning Chinese but doing 听写 ensures that you are engaged. Especially in this day and age where technology is so accessible, I highly recommend that you spend a few minutes listening and writing whenever you have the time.

Speak as much Chinese as you can

Speaking the language to improve your comprehension seems so self-explanatory, but it is often hard to do. The truth is that you can never improve without implementing the use of the language. No matter how bad you think your Chinese is, try to speak as much of it as you can. Physically using the language can exponentially improve your dictation.

These are only a few tips that have personally helped me in my journey of learning Chinese. I highly recommend that you follow them and utilize the resources available to you.

It has been a while since I have practiced my Chinese. I am worried that my Chinese has worse especially after quarantine. So, this article was very helpful and reassuring that I have a chance to improve my Chinese. I use to go to a Chinese school when I was younger where I was tested by 听写 to make sure I knew the new vocabulary from the previous day. I’ve had multiple friends tell me that watching Chinese dramas and reality tv shows will improve my Chinese. I’ll be sure to get some recommendations and try that out! Unfortunately, I can’t really speak Mandarin at home as both of my parents speak Cantonese, but my grandmother can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese. When I see her again, I want to practice my Mandarin with her.

You did a great job on this article since most people reading are students still learning Chinese. I like how you included fun ways to improve your Chinese besides just sitting and practicing reading and writing. I’m going to watch Chinese movies tomorrow.
