Top Five Chinese Desserts

Many people would agree that desserts are one of the best things in the world. As a dessert fanatic myself, I have always wondered about desserts that are popular across the globe, and as a Chinese student, I was especially intrigued about desserts that are popular in China. Here are five of the most popular desserts in China:

  1. Red Bean Bun (豆沙包)

In China, red bean buns are a popular treat that is composed of a steamed bun filled with red bean paste. These buns come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are served all across China. Although red bean is the most popular flavor, these buns also come in other flavors, such as pine nut kernel paste, taro paste, or even black bean paste.

  1. Dragon Beard Candy (龙须酥)

This tasty treat is very similar to cotton candy, as it is made of spun sugar. Not only is this a popular candy, but it is considered an art form by some, considering that its origins date back to the Han Dynasty. This dessert is often sold as street food and in popular tourist destinations.

  1. Egg Tarts (蛋挞)

Egg tarts are a custard-filled tart with a sweet and buttery crust. Many people believe that this tasty treat is best eaten when warm. Egg tarts are usually found in Cantonese-style restaurants, but they can also be found in specialized shops and convenience stores.

  1. Candied Fruit on a Stick (糖葫芦)

Candied fruit on a stick, or tanghulu, is a popular dessert that usually consists of sugar-dipped apples on a stick, but it also comes in other varieties, such as kiwi and grape. These treats are often found around tourist destinations and in carts that can be found all across China.

  1. Pumpkin Pancakes (南瓜饼)

As the name suggests, pumpkin pancakes are simply pancakes made of pumpkin! These treats are often deep-fried and served with roasted sesame seeds as a garnish. Pumpkin pancakes are notorious for their sweet flavor, and some say they are even one of the sweetest desserts in China. Pumpkin pancakes are usually found in Sichuan-style restaurants, but since they are very popular, they can also be found in other places across China, too.
