There are many prodigious Chinese musicians, but perhaps one of the most famous is Yo Yo Ma (马友友), an acclaimed performer known all over the world for his beautiful music.
Yo Yo Ma is a master of the cello (大提琴 dàtíqín). He is Chinese-American, born in Paris and raised in the United States. Known as a child prodigy, Ma was first taught the cello by his father. He later attended the Julliard School of Music and went on to have incredible success in his career. A composer (作曲家 zuòqǔjiā), as well as a performer, he won 18 Grammys for his music.
In addition to a thriving career, Ma founded the Silk Road Project to raise awareness of the culture and art of the ancient Silk Road (丝绸之路 sīchóuzhīlù), a trading route that stretched from China to the West.
Yo Yo Ma is a truly extraordinary human being and a huge contribution to classical music as we know it today.
