Youtubers

During my free time, I have been able to check out a bunch of different YouTubers for fun and for keeping my Chinese language skills sharp over the summer. Here is a compiled list of my recommendations:

Xiaomanyc 小马在纽约

小马 is an American YouTuber who has made a variety of fun videos about Chinese and many other languages. He was able to become fluent in Chinese because he lived abroad in China for about a year. Many of his early videos mainly consist of him going to Chinese restaurants and surprising the staff with his level of fluency. He is often spotted walking around the streets of New York’s Chinatown, surprising shop owners and tasting delicious food along the way. Now, he has branched off into learning a variety of different languages such as Spanish. He continues to make entertaining videos about interacting with different people, experiencing new cultures and foods, and doing language learning challenges.

Jared 杰里德

Jared is another American YouTuber who is also fluent in Chinese. His main focus is to create funny videos that exaggerate both American and Chinese lifestyles. His videos are engaging and hilarious with his use of props and ridiculous costumes. Even though his videos seem to be mainly for entertainment purposes, they are great for Chinese listening practice. Ironically, there is probably something for everyone to relate to as a Chinese learner or a native Chinese speaker in his videos.

Shuoshuo Chinese 说说中文

说说 is a native Chinese speaker who lives in Bangkok, Thailand. She is a certified Chinese teacher. On her channel, she has a variety of language learning tips, listening, vocabulary, and grammar videos. She is extremely helpful for people who want to spice up their sentences with advanced vocabulary that true native speakers use.

李子柒

李子柒 (Lǐzǐ qī) is a YouTuber who lives in China and creates aesthetically pleasing videos to present ancient Chinese culture to the rest of the world. She lives her life in a fairytale-like setting on a quiet farm up in the mountains and is always surrounded by beautiful flowers. She cooks all of her meals from the crops she grows. She climbs trees, rides horses, dyes her own fabric, and builds her own furniture. In her videos, she shows how she can turn crops into food, flowers into tea, and rolls of thread into embroidery. Her skills are truly a sight to behold. To no one’s surprise, she has over 15 million subscribers to her channel. Even though she doesn’t talk often in her videos, she exposes us to thousands of years of culture and the Chinese way of life.
