Yuanyang Terrace Fields

There is an extremely beautiful rice field in Kunming (昆明), China, called the Yuan Yang Rice Fields (元阳梯田). It is recognized by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site and has been the Hani people’s masterpiece for generations. If you enjoy nature and photography, then it is a place you should definitely visit if you are in China.

The vast fields cover 28,000 acres in total. The most popular ones are Duoyishu, Bada, and Laohuzui.  In particular, Bada is famous for its sunsets, which cause the terraces to change color. When the sun sets, the terraces shift from pink to rose, and to then scarlet.

The Hani people’s ancestors arrived at the mountain range between the Hong and Mekong rivers 2,500 years ago and cultivated rice for a living. The terraces consist of 3,000 steps and extend through many towns.

The best time to visit these fields are from January to March, when the terraces have been irrigated and the water reflects sunshine to create many colors. In early spring, the terraces are also decorated with many flowers, such as pink peach blossoms and white pear blossoms.

Finally, visiting this area is very affordable! The YuanYang Fields only cost 100 yuan (元) to visit, which is approximately 14.29 USD. So, I would definitely recommend this place to all travelers in China!

Very amazing! Maybe I should go to these fields someday and look at the unusual shapes. Its one of the most unique forms of traditional farming. If I went there, I would take a picture there and send it to National Geographic! Very unusual natural scenery article!
