Ancient Art: Blue-Green Shan Shui

A few weeks ago I went to Manhattan with my mother to see an art exhibit. After an hour and a bit traveling there, we finally arrived at a studio. At first, I didn’t understand exactly what we were going to look at because my mother just said it was some old Chinese art style with like three colors. However, the first thing I saw already amazed me. It was a long landscape picture from compiled papers stretching from wall to wall. We arrived early to help the artist but there were already people gazing at the art. The depictions mainly only had three colors: blue, green, and gold like the name suggests. However, when I went there and met with the artist, Mr. Wang, my mind was blown. I had questioned how three colors could make paintings so beautiful but the depicted rivers and mountains took my breath away. They were all so clean yet with an ancient eastern aura. It was an amazing experience to see such quality materials and colors in a beautiful landscape.

The history of the art goes all the way back to the Dynasties. First formulated by Li Sixun, different schools and styles soon popped up. Each Dynasty had different styles like the Tang Dynasty with a general style and later the Northern Song Dynasty with a bright style and other varieties. The current most dominant style is the little blue-green shan shui painted in the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. With a long history, it is surprising that this art style had survived for so long. I feel very fortunate to be able to see in person the beautiful and ancient style. We all appreciate the latest technologies like the latest iPhone or computer but I hope we all can spend more time to revel in the beauty of more antique and cultural arts.

Those paintings look absolutely stunning! They look just like real Chinese paintings that have detail yet simplicity, and manage to paint a picture with only blue, green, and gold. This style of painting resembles nature and its natural beauty with its mountains and rivers. I would love to go to the art exhibit sometime! Great article!

This was such a cool article. As an art enthusiast I found this very interesting. China has always had such a distinct style of art. I was lucky enough to see the Asian art exhibit at the MET, so I can see the connections between this and the ancient art pieces from the museum. I would love to learn more about Chinese art.

Amazing! I also can’t believe that only three colors were used to make the beautiful painting. I hadn’t known that Li Sixun was the founder of Eastern landscape art. It’s interesting how the current style is a mix of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. I hope I can see this art exhibit someday. Great job!

Great article! Like you said, you have to see it to believe it! How using only three colors can produce such amazing art! I could not agree with you more about appreciating cultural arts and antiques over modern technology.

Only 3 colors used! Takes incredible knowledge and talent to make a painting, let alone a painting with 3 colors. I would love to go and see this exhibit in real life to see the true colors of the painting and how it was used.

Cool article! It’s impressive that the painting only consisted of using 3 colors. Also, the art and style of painting is beautiful. I like how each dynasty had their own style of painting. It shows the progression of art throughout the years. I would consider going to the exhibit over the summer.

This is amazing; I have always appreciated art from different cultures. Especially Chinese art and its attention to detail and beautiful brush strokes. It must have been really interesting to meet the artist and learn his perspective as well. Additionally, I find it fascinating how from dynasty to dynasty the style of art changes. Thank you for sharing!

    非常好的文章,我现在还是无法相信只有三种颜色可以用来制作漂亮的画作。 我不知道李思舜是东方山水艺术的创始人。很好的文章。

I find that art transcends cultural boundaries, and can be the universal language when no words need to be spoken. Across these cultures, people can use this art to further understand different types of people, and ways of life. In addition, the way you presented your thoughts in a coherent manner was very well-done. Your article was very refreshing, Larry. Thank you.
