Best Chinese Shows to Watch

If you want to improve your Chinese, one of the best ways is to watch Chinese shows. Growing up in a Chinese family, I would always watch different shows with my mom. Watching these shows has improved my Chinese tremendously. I started to learn so many Chinese idioms that I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t watch those shows. Let’s take a look at a few:

1. Rush to the Dead Summer (夏至未至)

Rush to the Dead Summer is a show that is mostly taken place in a high school. The story talks about this character, Li Xia, and her high school years. She has faced a lot of conflicts throughout the story, but with the help of her friends, she is able to overcome all those difficulties. The theme of this story is love, friendship, and trust.

2. LOVE 020 (微微一笑很倾城)

LOVE 020 is also a show that is taken place in school. The girl main character, Wei Wei, and her friends are sophomores in college, while Xiao Nai(the other main character) is a senior in college. Since both of them major in computer science, this show talks a lot about game development. The two main characters are best friends in the game, but they never met each other in real life. This show has become really popular in China, and I would really recommend watching this.

3. The Whirlwind Girl (旋风少女)

The Whirlwind Girl is a drama that talks mostly about Taekwondo. The drama starts out with this girl name Qi Bai Cao who has a love for Taekwondo, but because of her father, she is unable to learn it. With the help of her best friend, Xiao Ying, Bai Cao eventually gets a chance. As the story progresses, she works her way up from someone who knew nothing about Taekwondo to a world champion for Taekwondo.  I personally love shows that involve with martial arts.

Coming from a Cantonese family, many of my close relatives watch Chinese shows and dramas. One of my cousins is addicted to watching Chinese drama. Most of the Chinese movies that I have come across were filled with bad acting and storyline, which is why I do not watch that much Chinese shows. Thanks for posting.

Cool article! I know Korean shows and dramas are more popular than Chinese ones so I always thought Chinese shows weren’t entertaining or well made. Most of them seem pretty old-school and are just remakes of other hit shows. I’m not sure but I may try watching one of these shows one day to improve my Chinese.

Great article! I used to know a lot of Chinese when I was younger, because I actually had to time to go to my grandparents house. My grandma loves watching Chinese movies. Therefore, I was able to pick up on speaking Chinese very well. Unfortunately, I forgot most of it between first to fifth grade. So in sixth grade I basically had to learn Chinese again. Movies, newspapers, books, and other medias/movies, can help the brain expand with knowledge (languages), and other information. Even living in a house with Chinese speaking parents can help influence the child’s language. I have not yet watched the movies you listed above. Maybe i’ll eventually watch it.

This was a very interesting article! When I was young, I used to watch Chinese dramas with my aunt every night and it definitely helped improve my Chinese. I’ve watched Love 020 before, but I’ve never heard of the other two shows you mentioned! After hearing about them, I’m definitely going to watch them soon!

This was really informative! Coming from a mixed family, I have never really had the chance to watch any Chinese shows. But now I will try to watch these when I get the time. Now I really want to watch Love 020, as it sounds really interesting. And as a bonus, I guess it would also help with my Chinese!

Interesting article! I am an avid TV watcher, and yet haven’t watched many Chinese shows; however, my parents are quite fond of such shows. This list will definitely assist my choice in trying out a Chinese program. There seems to be a common theme of romance and love between each show, very interesting!

This article was very informative. I have never watched a Chinese TV show before but after reading this I just might. The descriptions were very well done and gave a good, not too long, not too short summary about the show. I also liked how the cover of the show was shown to make it a little bit easier to find. Great article Helen Zhang.

Amazing article! I am a huge fan of Chinese dramas but I never have the time to watch them. I think your descriptions are great since it will make it easier for others to see what dramas they would like to watch.

This is a great article! One of my friends recently recommended that I watch Chinese drama. However, I don’t usually watch them since there are so many episodes and I could never find the time to watch them. I like how you included a description of each drama for the readers to see. Thank you for writing this article!
