Congested China

China’s Prodigious Population
China is the home of the world’s largest population. With a whopping population of approximately 1.42 billion people, China holds nearly 1/7 of Earth’s population. China’s immense population is multi-beneficial, but also has downsides. A larger population causes a demand for necessities including health, education, transport, services, and more. This significantly boosts China’s economy. In China’s benefit, there will be more taxpayers. Nevertheless, a large population is correlated with disadvantages. As witnessed in China, population growth can depress living standards. Living standards are daily actions and circumstances that people are put through. It goes as far as having too many cars on the road, all the way to having food available on the table. Additionally, it drastically increases the exploitation of nonrenewable resources.

Due to China’s substantial population, congestion is a major problem that China is currently facing. Cities in China have high population densities. Even if one visits a famous city in China, it would be packed with pedestrians and cars. Car ownership rates have increased in the twenty-first century, as it is more likely for a person to own a car. Since there are so many people in China, a good amount with cars, China’s highways and roads are extremely congested. People sometimes wait through hours of traffic a day.

Considerable Environmental Issues
In consideration of China’s large population of drivers, climate change is increasing. This to more and more people on the roads burning fossil fuels while driving. Cars emit carbon dioxide as a part of their emissions. Thus, our personal vehicles are a major cause of climate change. One may ask, “Why is carbon dioxide emissions such a big deal anyway?” The simple answer is that carbon dioxide acts as a greenhouse gas, trapping heat in Earth’s atmosphere. Therefore, carbon dioxide emissions contribute to the greenhouse effect, which is the warming of the Earth’s atmosphere due to the buildup of heat-trapping gases. In addition, China has so many factories, emitting even more harmful gases straight into Earth’s atmosphere. The leading culprit of pollution in China is coal, which is used in factories. In some areas, the pollution is so bad that people wear anti-pollution filter masks.

I think it’s terrible how the bad the pollution can get in China. According to the article, the leading source of pollution is coal and the burning of fossil fuels. I hope that one day China can be pollution free.
