Crazy Rich Asians

Last week, the new romantic-comedy movie Crazy Rich Asians premiered in theaters nationwide and is now the #1 movie in America.  Being an Asian-American myself, I am so incredibly proud and overjoyed that this movie has come out.  It is rare to see Asian-Americans in mainstream media and a movie with an entirely Asian cast really shines a light on this pressing issue.  The movie is about a girl named Rachel Chu who accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young, on a trip to Singapore.  What she doesn’t know is that Nick’s family is incredibly rich and his mother doesn’t approve of her.  The movie focuses on the struggle between Rachel facing Nick’s family and the wealthy elite of Singapore.  I think that this movie is a huge step in the right direction for representation of minorities in mainstream media.  The movie is directed by Jon M. Chu.  The movie stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, and Ken Jeong.  It is based off of the book, Crazy Rich Asians, by Kevin Kwan.  Hopefully, we will begin to see more and more representation for Asian-Americans in film, television, music, and all other forms of entertainment.  I think that this movie is a great start.  Thanks for reading!

Great job Jason! “Crazy Rich Asians” has dominated the box office the last few weeks and it’s really cool to finally see Asian-American actors in the media spotlight. My mom saw the movie and throughly enjoyed it. Personally, I wasn’t aware of the full Asian cast and I think this aspect of the movie is what makes it so popular. This film will serve to blaze a new trail in the film industry and open up more opportunities for Asian actors in the future.

I really like the article. The movie itself was amazing. Did you know that it is the first movie in a quarter century with an asian director? The movie domestically made $83,586,373. It made $7,300,000 in foreign markets. The movie had a production budget of $30,000,000. It is interesting that all of the actors in the movie are of asian descent, which is very uncommon in the American Filming Industry.

Thank you so much for writing this article, Jason! I really enjoyed how you emphasized the increase in appearance of Asian American actors within the film. In addition, I felt that it was a great addition that you added your own feeling of a lacking of asian presence within the film industry, and how movies such as “Crazy Rich Asians” are allowing Asian actors to gain more of a presence within American tv and film. Although I have not seen the movie personally, I have heard many great reviews from many people; I totally agree with the fact that due to the fact that this movie has a fully Asian cast, it increases awareness of the population in tv and film, and is what makes this movie specifically, more popular. Finally, I feel that by increasing the people’s awareness of Asians within the tv and film industry, Asian actors are on a better track to become more outwardly known for their talents and gifts as actors.

Great job on the article! I think that “Crazy Rich Asians” is a great movie that tells a story about the differences of the Asian-American and Asian culture. I saw the movie over my summer break and I loved it! It is great how the movie has an all-asian cast since it brings more attention to asian actors.

This was an amazing article that really shed light on an enormous issue in Hollywood- the representation of minorities in mainstream films. I agree, “Crazy Rich Asians” is a huge step towards the progress of Asian Americans in our modern pop culture. I loved how the cast of “Crazy Rich Asians” reflected the vast Asian community as the movie starred actors of various nationalities and ethnicities. Additionally, I loved that the movie had subtle nuances of Chinese culture that displayed Chinese art, daily life, and language. These included the mahjong scene, group dumpling making scene, and the symbolization of the color red throughout the entire film. I hope this movie can stand as a testament to the positive outcomes of including Asians/ Asian Americans in America’s media.

I watched the movie and really enjoyed it because it was interesting to see a movie with an Asian cast and see the creators tie different elements of the Asian culture into it. I am surprised but also very happy that it was ranked number one in the country and that Asians are getting the recognition they deserve. I also think that it is different that we are able to see two different Asian lifestyles in the movie, the wealthy elite to the middle and lower class that worked for success. Not only do I agree that this is a big step forward for representing minorities, but I am excited to see new opportunities open up for Asians. This was an amazing movie and thank you for writing this article!

Your article was great!. I watched Crazy Rich Asians myself. I thought it would be a generic rom-com, but it was very good. I watched it at first to support the film as I’m also Asian-American. I also thought it was great for a mainstream American film to star only Asian actors is great. The only problem I had with the movie was that it mainly only represented higher class Asians. The next film starring an all or mostly Asian cast should show the working class. The movie also was in Singapore showing mainly Chinese people. They should show other Asians and not just east-Asians,

Amazing job on the article Jason! I loved Crazy Rich Asians, the directing and cinematography is absolutely stunning. I remember growing up watching movies that had little to no Asian characters. The only movie that had a strong Asian cast was Mulan, and even then it was animated. When Crazy Rich Asians came out, I was ecstatic. The plot wasn’t about stereotypes of being Asian or Asian culture in general. On the contrary, the film in which everyone could relate to. Crazy Rich Asians is a huge step toward Asian casting and directing in Hollywood, and I hope to see more movies like it in the future.

  12. Kyle Chan

This article really sparked my interest since it is rare to see Asian-Americans in mainstream media. The movie has romance and comedy, which are two of my favorite genres. I am looking forward seeing Rachel face Nick’s family despite Nick’s mother not approving of their love. This movie has a really unique story and I will be sure to watch it during my free time.

  13. Dennis Chau

What an interesting article. I haven’t watched the movie yet, but it sure does sound like a great movie so I might just watch it soon. It is really a big step for the asian community to see a cast of asian people. I also agree that this movie makes a big step forward to represent asian minorities. I would really like to see some more movies in the future with an asian cast just like this one.

  14. Larry Ding

I haven’t been able to watch the movie. However, I am already looking forward to it from descriptions from my friends and the recent Daily China Crazy Rich Asians articles. Seeing Asians starring in a top box-office movie is something that should make every Asian proud of their culture. I hope that this movie is just a pioneer, one of many future movies that will drive Asian culture into the spotlight.

  15. Rona Cao

Wow, this movie sounds interesting. Even though I haven’t been able to watch the movie yet, I think it will definitely make me appreiciate my ethnicity and make more people understand the culture. I hope that in the future, there will be more movies about asians. I’m surprised that it’s the number 1 movie in America! I love romantic comedy movies, so I’ll definitely watch the movie when I have the time!

  16. Eric Ma

What an interesting article. After this article, I might as well and go watch this movie. This is a huge step for the Asians in the acting business because it shows what it is like to be an Asian and to me the other family. I was so happy to read that this movie was ranked first in America when it came out in theaters.

  17. Caroline Gross

I unfortunately have not been able to see this movie yet, but this article definitely intrigues me to go watch it! It is very interesting to hear about movies that have a unique plot. The fact that this movie is so prosperous and is reaching such a wide audience shows that the viewers enjoy such an original movie about a different race. The trailer for Crazy Rich Asians, gathered over one million views in it’s first three days! This movie also shows the difference between the Chinese culture and the American culture. It is also uncommon to have an all Asian cast, which hasn’t been done in 25 years in the American Film Industry. Crazy Rich Asians is part of a trilogy so based on how successful this movie has done so far, I certainly would not be surprised if the producers converted the other two books into movies as well!

  18. Daniel Yeh

I think that an all Asian cast movie that was well produced about something as universal as a love story will really help keep the Asian movie production and industry alive. And with this it will bring about a change in society where Asian people are still not fully accepted and discriminated against. Even if the stereotypes of typical love stories are there it works and will really help Asians in general with racism and bulling in america and other non Asian countries.

  19. Brian L

I’ve been thinking about watching this movie because of all the great reviews. This is a major turning point for the representation of Asian – American in media. I love the insight you provided about the movie. I’ll definitely try to watch the movie in my spare time.

  20. Jye Shang

Although I haven’t watched the movie, I now hope to watch it. It truly is interesting how the asian culture has impacted our American culture so greatly. It has also now taken the first spot of movie choices. I think that this movie makes me truly appreciate my ethnicity. I believe that when I do watch it, it would be funny and represent asian culture in the positive light.

  21. Andy Jiang

Having watched the movie, Jason is right on mark on just how significant the release of Crazy Rich Asians was to the many Asian Americans – such as myself – across the US. The all-Asian cast was most certainly enjoyable, albeit very rare to find. I hope that the movie brings light to the skill and potential of the many Asian actors and actresses of America; with the movie’s great success in the box office and with critics, the chances are looking greater and greater! It was a personal treat to see Ken Jeong play yet another comedic role – his other roles on shows like Dr. Ken are a personal favorite!

  22. Stephen L.

This movie looks very entertaining. Other movies, such as Black Panther, have had similar ambitions to increase representation of minorities in mainstream media. As more of these successful movies come out, the goal of equal representation will become more viable. The fact that this movie is the #1 movie in America is amazing and inspiring. Great article.

  23. Mackenzie Setton

I have not yet seen Crazy Rich Asians, but I am now compelled to do so thanks to this article! I think it’s important to have minorities represented in mainstream media, and this movie may be one of many more to come. Thank you for writing this article as it brings to light how our society is changing. The plot sounds incredibly interesting and I find it inspiring that the whole cast is Asian-American. I can’t wait to go watch this movie that I feel is very significant for society! Thanks!

  24. Eric Wang

Great job Jason! I have not seen this show yet, but I have seen a lot of commercials for this movie. After reading this article, it made me even more interested in this movie and I will definitely check it out. I cannot wait to see this movie not just because that it is very interesting, but it is also ranked number 1 movie in the states. This show can also give me a deeper background acknowledgment about the Asian society, therefore it could help me to learn their culture and language better. Thanks for writing this and I will definitely check this movie out!

  25. Catherine Liu

This article was very informative. It’s amazing how much Asians have influenced American media so much. The popularity of this movie will certainly cause the number of Asian actors and actresses will continue to increase in America. This movie seems interesting, and I would love to watch it.

  26. Kelly Wang

I’ve heard about this movie and I really want to watch it! I am really glad that the media is starting to take a step towards better representation for people of color. Thank you for this article, it’s very inspiring!

  27. Michael Kim

Great movie. If you didn’t watch it I highly recommend it. I’m glad you wrote about this because I think it’s interesting to see kind of like a new wave in the film industry. Asians are underrated in the industry and in media in general so it’s nice to see something new. There will definitely be a rise in Asian influence in my opinion due to the rising population of Asians in America, and this can already be seen in recent movies, featuring Asian actors.

  28. Justin Kweit

When I first watched the trailer I really wanted to go see this movie, but I haven’t had the time yet. I think the whole plot seems really funny and it seems like a great twist on the normal romance movie. Taking a closer look at the movie I am really interested and I am probably going to see it soon. Hopefully it is still in theatres by the time I can see it. I am wondering though is that how certain families live in Singapore?

  29. Claire Ma

I watched Crazy Rich Asians and it was a great movie. I, myself also as an Asian-American was happy that the lead was played by the Asian-American actress Constance Wu. I’m happy that this movie became #1 movie in America at one point because I think this movie really shows another side of Asian people that people in places like America don’t know about. This movie displayed an all Asian cast which is really amazing after so many years. This article states that “this movie is a huge step in the right direction for representation of minorities in mainstream media” which I agree with!

  30. Jessica Chen

This article was very nice. I watched “Crazy Rich Asians” and it was an amazing movie. There were so many scenes that made you laugh and cry. I’m very happy that there was a movie dedicated to Asian culture and had Asian-Americans actors/actresses take part in it. I hope that there are going to be more movies like this one made in the future!

  31. Gloria Cheng

This article makes me happy! I was ecstatic to hear about an all Asian cast and even happier that the movie was so good. This movie shows that Asians are being represented in the media now. Honestly, it made me laugh, smile, and even cry a few times. I can’t wait for the sequel, crazy rich girlfriend!

  32. Justin Cui

I actually haven’t watched the movie yet, but I’ve heard many good things about Crazy Rich Asians, and I am very glad that everyone is happy about Asian culture getting more exposure.

  33. patrick schnell

Awesome Article! I have not yet seen Crazy Rich Asians, but I am now compelled to do so thanks to this article! I recently found out that the movie is directed by an asian which definitely makes the movie much better!

  34. Helen Zhang

Great article, Jason! I also watched the movie, Crazy Rich Asians, and it is one of my favorite movies! The movie was funny in some parts that it made me laugh, but there was also sad parts that made me cry. There were some parts that I can even relate. If I can watch this movie again, I would totally rewatch this movie!

  35. Michael Pecorara

Thank you Jason, for writing this incredibly important article. Asian under-representation in Hollywood is frightening and too often Asians are only cast as stereotypes. This movie, despite controversy for casting a mixed race male lead, has truly given Asians boys and girls something to aspire to, a face in media that is undoubtedly their own. This movie has been positively killing it at the box offices, the #1 movie in America two weeks in a row, and has even been credited with reviving the rom-com genre. Also, I am always glad to see Constance Wu having success as she is one of my favorite actresses on television for her always-funny portrayal of Jessica Huang from Fresh off the Boat. I can’t wait to see this movie (or its soon-to-be sequel) in theaters! Great job.

  36. Emily Shi

I couldn’t wait to watch Crazy Rich Asians when I first saw the advertisements. I was overjoyed to an all Asian cast. As a reward for its message and uniqueness, this movie even hit #1! This movie shares with the audience relatable experiences as an Asian American. For example, the main character was judged instantly just for having associated with Americans. However, “romance always finds a way.” This movie is definitely a big step towards a direction for representation of minorities, such as Asians, in mainstream media

  37. Boshu Li

  38. Pritesh Patel

Nice article, Jason! I was happy to hear that a movie with an all Asian cast was coming out because we rarely get to see movies like this. It is also nice to see how different types of people all enjoy this movie, which gives voice to minorities in mainstream media. I think there are going to be more films like this for other cultures, and I honestly can’t wait for it.

  39. Jeff Bao

Amazing job Jason! I haven’t watched the movie myself, but I’ve seen the trailers and it seems very interesting. I remember reading another article that said about the last movie that was an all Asian-American cast was in 1993. To me, this seems outrageous because it took that long for another all Asian-American cast move to be made. I’m so grateful that Asian-Americans are finally being represented in the movie business, and to have a movie to hit #1 is surreal. I hope this movie can show that there is an underrepresentation of Asian-Americans in businesses like these. Great job!

  40. Brian Chu

Nice article Jason! When I first heard of a movie comprised of only asian actors, I was very excited to watch it. I still haven’t gotten to watching it, but will in the future with friends. I also wonder if this movie will be popular in China, as I believe that a reason why “Crazy Rich Asians” was so popular is because of a movie being made with a full asian cast, which is very rare. I love watching Constance Wu from Fresh off the Boat, and know she did a great job on this movie.

  41. Preethi Sridhar

I haven’t watched this movie yet but I am waiting to get tickets to watch this movie. I knew that this movie would be a great movie because, Jon Chu is an amazing director since his previous movies have been very successful. It’s nice to see that there is an all Asian-American cast in this movie since that is not the case nowadays. Hopefully, movies in the future contains a diverse cast!

  42. Gordon Wong

I watched the movie last week and found it very entertaining and funny. I also really liked how the cast was all Asian. This was the first time I have seen a movie with an all Asian cast and I would love to see this more often. It was great to see Asians being represented in movies. Your review of the movie was spot on. Great Job!!

  43. Avery Porges

Wow Jason, what an awesome article! I totally agree on the fact that Hollywood really needs to work on diversifying the cast of movies, and that Crazy Rich Asians was a great step in the right direction. It was awesome to see a movie holding such a power message be full of a star-studded cast, and become one of the most popular films out right now. I loved watching it, and I hope more people can too.

  44. Nicholas Yum

Great article, Jason! I, like many others, saw Crazy Rich Asians. This movie is meaningful for all people, but as an Asian-American, it means a whole lot more. American-made movies with an all Asian cast are extremely hard to come by and to see the first one in a long time have such an impact on people is just amazing! I hope to see more influential movies just like Crazy Rich Asians produced in the future. Keep up the great work!

  45. Joanna Grafas

This movie sounds so cool! I haven’t seen it yet, but really can’t wait to check it out in theaters. I love everything that this movie is doing for the Asian community, and it’s truly a step in the right direction to see such strong Asian leads in American film. This synopsis only got me more interested. Keep it up!

  46. Ryan Lam

This was a great article because people like me aren’t very strict when it comes to grading movies. When I first saw the ads for this movie, I thought it was going to be so bad. However, the reviews and this article convinced me otherwise. The movies uniqueness this article exposes is a major part in me wanting to actually watch this movie. Jason Suh did a great job summarizing the movie and making it sound interesting.

  47. abby dong

    我是一个非常爱看电影的人,但是好像没看过这部电影,有时间会去了解一下的。我希望以后的电影会越来越多,会有越来越的人喜欢上点供应

  48. Flora qin

This article was a great summary of the movie! I watched it with a few friends and I loved the movie. It’s incredible how the movie has an all Asian cast. I also agree that this movie shines some light on the issue of there being very few well known Asian actors and actresses.

  49. Kelly Mui

Finally a movie with an all Asian cast! This is a huge deal for the movie industry. Now there’s more representation that young people can relate to and be inspired by. Great job in summarizing this movie without giving any spoilers. I can’t wait to eventually see this movie!

  50. Michael Xie

This movie is a revolutionary piece of art, as it is a first Asian American movie that has gone to the mainstream. I have never watched this movie as of now but this article intrigues me to watch it. The story sounds very inspiring and positive, and this shows a great example that there are good Asian movies. This movie could have gone a lot better but the advertisement and the casting team are a lot less well known than other movies so it also hindered its ability to shine as much as it should have. Finally, I hope the Asian movie entertainment can continue to grow and will one day give us some of the most rememberable movies.

  51. Lisa Jiang

I always wanted to watch this movie after seeing the trailer, but I don’t have the time to go to the movies to watch. I was thinking of wait until it becomes available on the websites to watch. But after reading this I really want to go to see this movie like right now. You did so good on introducing this movie.

  52. Harrison Berger

I got the opportunity to see this movie last week. It was very good. I enjoyed seeing the how the culture in China worked. I did not expect the mother to not accept the girlfriend. I thought this because I thought the girl was a very sweet and caring girl but I guess she did not live up to the mothers expectations. I also liked seeing how the really rich asians come together to throw the party. I agree that this movie expresses the culture and the actors pull off their parts very well. Overall this movie was very good.

  53. Adil Kadirov

This movie brought me back when I leaved in Singapore for most of my life I really laughed my butt of and loved it. This article represent how this movie destroyed the box office and how good this was and I really liked it. When I saw the iconic places I remember when I was 7 and I went there. It almost made me cry once I would really want to go back and visit my home.

  54. Aaron Yeung

it was really interesting watching a full Asian cast. i found the movie and this review very enjoyable and i was dying in the movie theaters of laughter throughout this film. i agree on how it was an awesome movie and if i could i would watch it again. keep up the good work !!

  55. Morgan Park

I really enjoyed reading this article. I am actually going to see this movie in a couple of days. I have heard many things about this movie, especially that it is funny. I like this article, because it doesn’t give away the whole movie. It gives a glimpse, just so people can get interested. I hope I enjoy this movie when I watch it.

  56. Max Wang

    我觉得这篇文章非常好,因为它介绍了故事的发展和作者本身自己的想法,非常好。

  57. Meghna Satheesh

I watched Crazy Rich Asians two days ago, and while I was expecting a rom-com, I experienced so much more. Rachel trying to find her place in between Chinese-American culture and Chinese culture is something that I feel all Asian-Americans can relate to. It was also a very visually pleasing film as well, depicting a beautiful perspective of Singapore. It’s incredible to see an all-Asian cast, a situation that hasn’t happened in Hollywood for 25 years. Although I am South Asian, I feel that movie is a huge step in the American film industry for Asian-Americans as a whole, and we will be seeing more diversity in films in general.

  58. Richard R

Crazy Rich Asians seems like a really cool movie! I do want to note that this movie isn’t great because Asian Americans are featured in it, it is a great movie that happens to have had Asian American actors. Nevertheless, I do love that Hollywood has featured more Asian American actors. I also love the fact that the movie takes place in Singapore, which is one of my favorite places in the world! Hopefully we’ll see more quality films like this one.

  59. Julia Zhang

Thank you for sharing this article! I was really surprised by the theme of this movie. Just as you said, I almost never seen any Asian-American cast shining on the stage. But this movie gave us hope, that Asian actors will getting popular. I didn’t watch this movie yet, but after reading your article I think I really need to know it.

  60. Ethan Wang

I feel like a movie with asian leads are so rare. It’s great to see a successful movie about Asians. I really hope I can see it in theaters. It looks excellent. Good job writing this.

  61. Jeffrey Zhang

I think this was one of the better movies made and possibly the best movie of 2018. The full Asian cast proves that it is possible for Asians to do what everyone else has been doing for decades. Furthermore, it also highlights both the good and the bad associated with being wealthy. I think that this movie truly demonstrates that being wealthy doesn’t equate to happiness or love.

  62. Austin kweit

  63. mathew liang

Great article for a great movie. This article sums up the movie great. Crazy Rich Asian is the first Hollywood film in a long time that is not completely white-washed.It is nice to see an all Asian Hollywood movie do well because that means the Hollywood would be more willing to support these kinds of films and opens a whole new door for aspiring Asian filmmakers. A movie that is similar to this one in the way that it opens a new door for other movies like that is Black Panther.

  64. Jasmine Chen

Last week, I had the chance to see this movie with my friend. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I agree that it is a major step towards more representation of Asian-Americans in Hollywood. After all, it was the #1 movie in America when it hit theaters. I loved the plot and the way Chinese culture was depicted in this film. If you haven’t seen Crazy Rich Asians yet, I highly suggest you go watch it! Amazing article, Jason!

  65. Andrew Zheng

Great job on writing this article! I saw this movie with my friend last week. Growing up as an Asian-American, it was definitely cool to see a movie with an Asian cast. I agree that this movie is a big step in the right direction, and hopefully that in the future we’ll see more and more Asian-American actors in the entertaining industries. In addition, I think that overall, the movie industry is taking a big step in the right direction, such as Black Panther, featuring an African-American cast. Hopefully in the future, we’ll see a lot more movies featuring minorities like Crazy Rich Asians!
