Jessie J Wins Renowned Chinese Competition “Singer”

You may have heard of Jessie J—British singer and former judge on The Voice UK. But, did you know that most recently, she has become the winner of the Chinese singing competition Singer 2018?

Last year, Jessie J was invited as the first international celebrity to compete in Singer, one of China’s most popular singing competitions comparable to the Western show, X-Factor, except with many famous singers and artists as the competitors.

Not only has Jessie J already made history via this invitation, she has gained an incredible amount of publicity through her performances on the show over the course of eight weeks, culminating in her winning of the competition and amazingly, her gaining of hundreds of thousands of followers on Weibo. Jessie J has expressed her joy and excitement on Instagram, disclosing her appreciation for China for the opportunity to perform and compete on the show.

Jessie J has also expressed her embracing of “an opportunity to bridge a gap between two cultures,” referring to the Asian and Western communities of the world, as a reason for her acceptance of the invitation to sing on Singer 2018.

On the show, Jessie J captivated the audience with performances of her own hit songs (including “Domino” and “Flashlight”), as well through singing famous songs by artists such as Michael Jackson and Christina Aguilera. On the show’s finale, Jessie J memorably performed Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” for an audience of over one billion people.

Congratulations to Jessie J for this amazing accomplishment!

Excellent job, Caroline. I feel it is important for Western artists and music to spread to China, to bring our two nations together. This is just the first of many partnerships between our two nations.

I love Jessie J! Her songs are always so powerful and her voice is so soulful and rich. She’s such an amazing singer. This goes to show how music transcends nations and borders, it’s truly for everyone.

    能有一位外国歌手来参加中国的歌唱比赛很让人例外,但是jessy J是一名很有实力的歌手,能够和这样的对手较量,我相信对于我们国内的歌手提高一定很大。

Wow, Jessie J won China’s version of the X factor!?!?! That’s incredible, I mean not for her because she is awesome and I love her songs, but in general!

Wow! I remember first listening to “Flashlight” a few years ago. It’s really nice to see that singers from America and China are meeting, competing, and interacting with each other! It’s also cool that over a billion people watched her sing at the finals.

I was surprised that Jessy J won a Chinese award because she is a western singer. This can be a sign that the world is becoming more globalized. Not only that, Jessy J is a really good singer and I think she deserved it. Maybe the reason why she won it was because of her song that was really famous in China and Korea, Bang Bang? I felt like the world was more becoming one because in the 1990’s, a western singer would never be able to win a Chinese competition.

This was a very interesting article to read! I never knew that Jessie J competed in China and actually won! I would never have thought that she would compete in China. I think that she is a very good singer. I saw a video of her performing there, and found out that she is good at singing many types of music.
