Why Speak Chinese Video Contest

Below is Harrison Berger and Wesley Wang’s experience with creating a Why Speak Chinese video. Be sure to like and share their Instagram post! https://www.instagram.com/p/ByRUIpTgXC1/

Q: Why do you think videos like these are important?

A: I think contests like these give the opportunity for people from all different backgrounds and cultures to share their experiences with the rest of the world. It’s unfortunately rare to see communities truly embracing the vast diversity around them, but if we stop and listen to what others have to say, our views could be shaped differently in ways we didn’t know. Scrolling through my competitor’s videos, I found myself lost in their stories, with each new presenter bringing a unique personality. It’s fascinating to be a part of the diversity.

Q: What did you like about creating the video?

A: Making the video was definitely a lot of fun, but not without obstacles along the way. Harrison and I filmed the whole thing a few months ago, but apparently, the criteria of last year’s contest, which we worked off of, changed completely! We had to re-film everything weeks later, eventually traveling all the way to Chinatown to capture our desired footage and environment. Through time constraints, restaurant managers kicking us out, and camera batteries dying—ultimately, our perseverance withstood the challenges, and we were finally able to create the end product you see today. I guess the setbacks are part of the journey.

This video is absolutely brilliant, gentlemen. It warms my heart to see two fine young people taking in a foreign culture in one of its centers near our home on Long Island. I find that devotion to a culture very encouraging, and a wonderful subject to elaborate in a video. I hope you do very well in the competition, as well as taking in the distinct culture that you are learning in the classroom. I do hope that you enjoyed some fine food when you were in Flushing, the gastronomic experiences there are some if the best that I’ve had in the city.

What an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the video that we all saw in class. It must have bee so frustrating when you had to go back to Chinatown to re film all of the material because the contest requirements changed. Also, I can’t imagine the struggles you guys went through (including being kicked out of restaurants!). I thought the video was such a unique appreciation of the diverse perspectives of Chinese culture, and I’m glad to hear that making the video expanded your horizons as well. It really looked like you guys enjoyed yourselves and that is just wonderful! Keep up the great cinematography!

This is such an amazing video, the editing is phenomenal as well! It’s obvious from the quality of the video that lots of hard work and time was poured into creating this video. I thought that filming in Chinatown was a great idea, as it captures many aspects of Chinese culture and isn’t too far away either. Your devotion to Chinese culture was very clear and inspiring, and it was cool to hear about your experiences as well. It was interesting to hear about the challenges that you went through to create this video(being kicked out of restaurants!), but I think your perseverance definitely paid off. Overall, your video was a unique way to display your appreciation of Chinese culture and I hope you guys win the contest!
