汤圆- Katelyn Ma

Tang yuan (汤圆) is a sweet dumpling that is made from glutinous rice flour and water. Tang yuan are usually filled with sesame, red beans, or peanuts, but can also be unfilled. Tang yuan are typically eaten on the 15th day of the first lunar month, which usually is a full moon. As tang yuan is white and shaped like a ball, tang yuan looks like the moon!

Wow! I would love to try one of these as I’ve never eaten one. I’ve seen my parents eat it, but I never understood why. Next lunar month I will be sure to try eating this. Thanks so much for this article Katelyn.

Wow my grandma makes these. I thought it was just something within my family but its great to see that a lot of people enjoy these treats. Its also nice to know the history and traditions that go along with this. Previously I just thought it was just somme other staple food. Overall great article. Keep up the good work.

Yum! This looks and sounds so great. I have never had these specific dumplings before but I am a big fan of traditional vegetable dumplings. I love Chinese food so much so I will definitely try these soon. I am allergic to sesame and peanuts so I unfortunately cannot eat some of the fillings. Thank you for sharing!

Wow! That looks so delicious! I I have never had tang yuan, but I would love to now! I love dumplings, so I’m sure I would love these too! I think it’s really cool how they symbolize the full moon found on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Also, I think it’s super cool how there are many filling options, too! Really cool, thanks so much for sharing!

I’ve tried these dumplings before, but I didn’t enjoy it. I tried it with peanuts but not with red bean or sesame. My WaiPo likes to make these. This is one of the many takes on dumplings. I love these articles!

Your art is Sothebys quality, Katelyn. You are incredibly gifted with the pen, and I shall be looking forward to see more of the pieces you put forth on this website. Also, I have never eaten this dish before, so this will give me an inspiration to do so during Chinese New Year in a few weeks. Not only will I eat it, but I will introduce it to my parents, and hopefully they will enjoy it as much as I will. Thank you, again. This was a real treat.

Great drawing Katelyn! Those look so delicious. In Chinese IV, we recently learned about 汤圆。We learned about its cultural significance and how to say it. I have tried the red bean flavor before, but I would love to try the sesame flavor. I didn’t know that they were typically eaten on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! Great drawing, Katelyn! I really love your art style. I remember eating 汤圆 during Chinese holidays. It’s one of my favorite Chinese desserts! I love 汤圆 with peanuts and sesame. Maybe one day I’ll make them homemade. Great job with the drawing, keep up the amazing work!

Great drawing! The tang yuan in the picture look delicious. I haven’t tried any yet, but I’ll be sure to try some. I didn’t know that they were eaten on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month. My parents usually eat this every couple weeks. I also didn’t know that it was supposed to look like the moon. Great article!

    我很喜欢汤圆。汤圆是很传统的中国美食。汤圆软软的甜甜的,味道很好。中国人总是会在冬至的时候吃元宵。我最喜欢吃芝麻馅的汤圆。

Love the visual on tang yuan! I first had tang yuan when I was about 10 years old, and I didn’t really like it. My mom would make it once every two weeks at night as a dessert, and my dad and brother always ate it. I just found out that there are different kinds of tang yuan that can have different fillings, but have only ate ones with black sesame in it. Now I’ve grown to love the black sesame, and eat it all the time. Thanks for informing me about different kinds of tang yuan.

I’ve never had these before. But by the looks of your drawing, it looks delicious. Thanks for sharing what goes inside because I would want to try all the different flavors. These seem like a fun snack to share with my family. Thanks for posting!

Nice picture. I have never personally had tang yuan but I have heard many interesting things about it. While I studied in China I saw tang yuan being made and my exchange student ate it for breakfast one day before we went off to school. I never knew that they were eaten on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. I definitely want to try this in the future.

Great drawing! The tang yuan in the picture look good enough to eat. I see my parents eat these all the time. I have not eaten these. I will try some next time. Great article!

I really love this food . My mom would make it once every two weeks at night as a dessert, and my dad and brother always ate it. I eat this on it’s festival every year.

This looks so delicious! I actually really want to eat this. I have never tried this nor have even heard of this before. I’ll try to ask my parents to see if they know what this is later. Great Job!

This dish looks very interesting. I love trying new things so I would try this. It’s very cool that you can fill it with different things. I am not a fan of red bean so I wouldn’t have that kind. Awesome picture and article

This is very interesting. I never knew Tang yuan are typically eaten on the 15th day of the first lunar month because my mom makes them for me all the time. I also didn’t know it’s suposed to look like a full moon. My favorite filling is black sesame, because it’s the only one I ever eat. Tang Yuan is so tasty, yet so tasty!

I really enjoy eating tang yuan with black sesame in it. I actually have some store bought tang yuan in my refrigerator right now. I don’t really like tang yuan with red bean in it because it isn’t as sweet as ones with black sesame in it or even ones with peanuts. Since the filling isn’t as sweet and the skin of the tang yuan also isn’t very sweet, it turns out tasting a little bland. For those that haven’t ever had tang yuan before I would highly recommend trying the black sesame ones. They are so delicious!

Tang yuan from what I learned is a traditional sweet desert that I have personally tried. It has a nice smooth texture and is like a soft moji in your mouth when you eat it. Historically, a number of different names were used to refer to this food. During the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, the name was officially settled as yuanxiao (derived from the Yuanxiao Festival), which is used in northern China. This name literally means “first evening”, being the first full moon after Chinese New Year, which is always a new moon. This is what I learned when I went to Chinese heritage museum in Singapore. Very interesting article.

Oh my god i love Tang Yuan. I love the red bean dumpling. It is one of my most favorite deserts. Whenever i go to a Chinese restaurant i always order this for desert. The flavor is so sweet and the rice that is sweet brings joy to my stomach. I love this desert and i will love to have it everyday.

I love to eat Tang Yuan! They have been part of my childhood since I was young and I continue to eat them now once in a while. Tang yuan is filled with sesame and red beans but I normally eat it with sesame. Some people don’t like eating tang yuan because of the sticky texture, but I think tang yuan is delicious! When I was in China, we ate it on the 15th day of the first lunar month since there was a full moon. I think it’s cool that tang yuan is white and shaped like a ball resembling the moon!

  26. Andrew Cheung

This picture is really amazing! Tang Yuan is one of my favorite Chinese desserts that I’ve had since I was six. My favorite flavor is with black sesame, but the flavors can vary from red bean to peanuts. I also found out that Tang Yuan is eaten not only during Chinese New Year, but also during DongZhi festival. I never thought about Tang Yuan resembling the moon before, so that’s pretty cool! I’ll be sure to have some during the New Year this year with my family!

I don’t have much to write about this article, except for a good job! My grandparents make these for me with sesame in the middle. I eat these for breakfast sometimes and especially around the holidays. These taste really good and I like to add a lot of sugar when I eat. I don’t think the image is a good image in trying to describe what it looks like. Next time I hope you write more but keep up the good job.

I like this article as it was very informative and described a Chinese food that I had no clue even existed. Thank you for including a drawing/ picture of the actual food as it helped me to see the similarities between this food and the moon. I find it interesting that this food can have so many different flavors available, and even can be eaten plain. I wonder how long it takes to make this food, and if I can get this at a local Chinese supermarket. This food looks very delicious, especially the red bean flavor. I look forward to seeing more Daily China articles about authentic Chinese foods.

Wow, these Tang Yuan look very interesting. I wonder what they taste like. I think I would like to try peanut filled ones the most. I also think it would be fun to try making some. Thank you for sharing this wonderful article on this food and how it relates to Chinese culture.

Wow! I love your drawing! I have never had these before but your drawing makes it look delicious. I think it’s interesting that they put red beans into this ball and eat it on lunar day! Thanks for sharing!

Cool drawing Katelyn! The drawing looks so realistic and delicious. The article is both helpful and informative. I’ve usually had the usual black seasme filled sweet dumpling and never had the peanut filled one. I loved to try it out one day and also spread the knowledge I’ve learned in this article. Thanks for sharing your drawing and your information

This is a very detailed and good drawing of 汤圆! The caption of this drawing was also very well written. It was so descriptive that it made me want to try 汤圆 in real life.
