This is such a good painting. The colors are very vibrant. It is interesting that the Chinese people eat these on Chinese new year. I also find it interesting what this symbolizes. I very often eat many oranges. Great painting!

Amazing piece, Amy! This work of art is so neat and clean, and the colors are very vibrant. I love mandarin oranges, they are so sweet and delicious! I never knew that they were eaten around Chinese New Year. Also, I think it’s really cool that they symbolize luck, prosperity, and longevity. I have never thought about giving mandarin oranges as gifts, but I will definitely reconsider, especially if they are such good luck! Thanks so much for sharing!

Wow. These oranges are so beautiful. I have never eaten Mandarin oranges before but I am hoping one day I do. What is different from a Mandarin orange to a typical orange? They look so great and vibrant in this painting. You did a great job capturing the dimensions of the orange in the image above. Nice job.

Wow! Such a beautiful painting to go with such a tasty fruit. I always see my family members eating these although I don’t really like them myself. However, I didn’t know that people ate these specifically on Chinese New Year. I really like what the orange symbolizes. Thanks Stephanie!

This is an amazing drawing. I didn’t know there were mandarin oranges. This is a very educational picture. Not only that but the shading and colors in that orange is absolutely fantastic. Keep up the good work.

Great article. I never knew mandarin oranges were eaten on Chinese New Years. I also never knew they symbolize good luck. I like to eat mandarin oranges, so I can relate. Thank you for sharing.

This painting is so beautiful! The elegant green stems balance the two vibrant oranges so nicely. The calligraphy placed above it also compliments the aesthetics. I happen to love Mandarin oranges more than normal oranges. They’re more juicy and small. Thank you for sharing!

Cool painting Amy! My family frequently eats mandarins. I love the sweet taste from the mandarins. It’s interesting that they symbolize luck, prosperity, and longevity. I wish to see more of your paintings!

Great picture! I could never imagine myself being able to draw that. I’ve never known the difference between mandarin and normal oranges but i’m assuming that mandarin ones are smaller. I never known that they represent ideas. Keep it up, I wish to see more of your pictures in the future.

Your art looks quite excellent, Amy. You are incredibly gifted with the brush and pen. Not only do oranges represent a greater part of Chinese culture, but also in my Jewish culture as well. In our homeland, Israel, one can smell the orange essence walking up the Mediterranean through the ancient Ottoman trading city called Jaffa. These Jaffa Oranges are sold and recognized worldwide. I should love to eat the two of these confectionaries together, and taste the symbolism in both. Fantastic work, overall.

Great picture Amy! I love oranges and eat them all the time! I didn’t know that people eat them during Chinese New Year. I also didn’t know that they symbolize luck and prosperity. I did know that people give them as gifts! Thanks for sharing!

Great drawing Amy! You’re such an amazing artist. Great job with the shading! My mom used to feed me oranges after a large meal instead of desserts — like cake, tarts, etc. I never knew the symbolism behind mandarin oranges — luck, prosperity, and long life. I love the sweet taste of mandarins. I can’t wait to see more of your work! Keep up the great job!

Wow I love the details in this drawing! The shades and layers makes the oranges appear very realistic, as if they could be taken out of the screen. I’ve always known that oranges were important to Chinese culture but I’ve never really understood why. They’re not red, which would ward off evil spirits. Now I know that these mandarin oranges are a symbol of luck, prosperity, and long life.

Wow, amazing painting! The way the color blends makes the oranges look much more realistic. I always thought that mandarin and oranges were the same just different in size. I do like mandarins more because they happen to taste sweeter to me. I did not know that they symbolized ideas too.

Very nice picture Amy! It looks orange on my caprisun pouch. Oranges are an integral part of the Chinese New Year celebration as they are attached to the proverb da ji da li. I really like the bright colors. I’m looking forward to eating some mandarin oranges for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Wow, nice drawing Amy! I can’t draw even as close to as well as you do. The colors are really vibrant. I didn’t know that mandarines represented good luck and fortune so for the next Chinese New year, I’m going to be eating as many as I can. Thanks for sharing.

Cool picture Amy! These are orange, like the name. I used to eat these as dessert. They are very sweet. I have not given these as gifts. I will though. Great article!

Nice drawing Amy! I don’t really like oranges, but after seeing that drawing I think I might have to try them. I like how the colors blend and make it look so realistic. I never knew that mandarines symbolize good luck and fortune. Keep up the great work Amy!

Love the picture of the oranges! My family gives oranges sometimes when I visit family, and i´ve always wondered why. Until I asked them about 2 years ago, I never knew. I wonder if you can only give mandarin oranges, or any other kind of orange? Anyways, thanks for writing about this article!

You’re such an artist, Amy! I didn’t know that you could draw so well. I learned that oranges symbolize luck, prosperity, and long life. I love oranges so I eat them really often during wintertime :p Sometimes, I eat too much of them and my hands and fingernails all turn yellow.

Wow, this is such a pretty painting of oranges. I could never really draw that well, but I always enjoys looking at different art pieces. During Chinese New Year, whenever I bow to my ancestors there are always mandarin or oranges in on the offerings. I never really knew why, however thanks to article I have learned that oranges and mandarin are symbols luck, prosperity, and long life. I can see why they make such great gifts when I go to visit my relatives!

This looks awesome! I wish I could draw that well! When I usually draw it is small doodles and things that don’t look that good. This actually looks really good! I wonder how long you had to practice before you could draw like this. Great Job!

Amazing artwork! I wish I could draw and paint like this. I absolutely love eating Mandarin oranges; they are easy to peel and are usually very sweet. However, the sour ones are really sour. I never realized the meaning of Mandarin oranges, now I understand why there are always oranges at my grandma’s house. Thank you for sharing!

This picture is very well drawn! My family and I always eat mandarin oranges during Chinese New Year because my parents would tell me it symbolizes luck, prosperity, and long life. Sometimes, we would receive a box as a gift or we would give them as gifts. I always knew that they are associated with gold because of the bright orangish color which makes sense because it means good fortune. During Chinese new year, I would see them everywhere in supermarkets or stands in the streets selling bags of mandarin. Since the new years is coming up, my parents bought a lot of mandarins to eat.

One of the burning questions I had while reading this brief article is what the main differences between a common orange and a mandarin orange. This is what I have researched above and beyond this article. Mandarin oranges are smaller and ovally, rather than spherical like the common oranges (which are a mandarin hybrid). The taste is considered is not as sour, as well as sweeter and stronger tang to it. A ripe mandarin is firm to slightly soft, heavy for its size, and pebbly-skinned. The peel is very thin, with very little bitter white so they are usually easier to peel and to split into segments. Hybrids generally have these traits to a lesser degree.

Thank you for this article as it was different and unique from a lot of the other standard articles. I liked how you included a drawing of the fruit itself as well as wrote the Chinese characters next to it. The drawing displayed great artistic ability, and depicted the fruit very realistically. I love eating Mandarin Oranges all the time, especially during Chinese New Year. I find it interesting that these fruits symbolize luck and prosperity, as well as are very delicious! Thank you for this article as it taught me about the meaning and symbolism of a fruit that I eat often! Keep up the good work!

You are an amazing artist! I love how you shaded the oranges to make it seem real and 3D. I had no idea that oranges are a part of the Chinese culture and symbolize luck, prosperity and long life. Interesting!

Wow! Your drawing is so pretty! I love eating mandarin oranges because they are so sweet and delicious. They are also so healthy for you and are a good alternative to eating fatty unhealthy sweets. It is also interesting that they symbolize luck, prosperity and long life. Thank you for sharing your beautiful drawing!

  36. Andrew Cheung

Wow, well done on this drawing! My family loves to eat these mandarin oranges, especially near Chinese New Year. The bright orange colors represent fortune and prosperity. This article answered my question as to why these oranges were everywhere in the markets near Chinese New Year. I really love the nice blend of colors in order to make the already pretty oranges appear slightly shiny. This Chinese New Year, I’ll be sure to spread good fortune and eat lots and lots of these oranges with my family.

Amazing drawing Amy! Your drawing is so inspiring that it makes me want to improve me drawing skills! I love eating oranges and I usually eat them once everyday! These drawing looks so realistic that it makes me want to eat one right now. My parents sometimes gave oranges to some people but I didn’t understand why. I now understand that it brings luck and prosperity. Thank you for sharing!
