福到了- Kinty Li

Ever seen this iconic sign? This is a traditional sign many Chinese families put at their front doors when it’s near years! It’s a sign that’s actually a very interesting pun. When you interpret the sign literally, the character Fú is upside down. In Chinese, it would be “福倒了”, but the “倒了”(which means fall down or turned over) sounds like “到了“ (which means arrived). Therefore, it would sound like “福到了”, which means that “luck/good fortune has arrived”!
