New Year’s Lion- Katelyn Ma

During Chinese New Year, people perform the lion dance to bring good luck and good fortune. During the performance, the lion wakes up and walks around and interact with the crowd. Sometimes, the lion jumps on poles and dances around. Then the lion eats a ball of lettuce and spits it out. At the end, the lion takes a scroll by the mouth and unrolls it.

Amazing use of colors and details! I love the textured background. It gives the image more of an energetic feeling. The lion performances during Chinese New Year have always been really exciting to me and crazy that those people can move in such synchronization. I hope to see more!

Wow, what an amazing piece of art! The lion is beautifully done with great details and I like how the background has streamers in it, making the piece just a little more interesting. Your calligraphy of the characters is also amazing, overall a fascinating creation. I knew that the lion dances were a ritual during the new year, but i didn’t know about the spitting of the lettuce, so interesting! I also didn’t know that the lion unfolds the scroll at the end of the dance, as portrayed in the artwork. I would love to see more of your work! Really amazing piece, thanks for sharing!

Wow, this piece of artwork is so well done, I love all the details and the colors really compliment to each other. I already knew that performing the lion dance are suppose to bring good luck and fortune. However, something I didn’t know was that the lion were suppose to open its mouth and a scroll would unfold out f its mouth! Every year I would go to Chinatown with my family to watch the street performances of lion dances. I always admired the dexterity it took to perform the dances!
