Go! – Amy Sheen

Go, or weiqi, is a board game that the Chinese invented over 2,500 years ago. The game involves a board and white and black stones. Two players try to capture their opponents stone by surrounding it with their own. This game represents the complexity of life and is still played today!

This game reminds of a Chinese game that I am familiar with called Chinese chess with the blue, green, red, and yellow pegs. I have actually played this game once in China with my exchange student. He tried explaining it to me, but I had difficulty understanding all the rules. It seems like a really fun game. I want to try playing it again soon.

I am actually very familiar with this game. I used to play with my friends or at least attempted to, and I had a lot of fun. My parents taught me this game so long ago that I probably forgot some of the rules and tricks. However, a friend of mine tried to reteach it to me and I started playing again. Thanks for drawing such a great picture.

I have heard of this game before, but never knew what it looked like. It reminds me of chess by like how u have to capture the enemy “king” by surrounding it. Not only that, but it looks way more confusing than chess. I might have find people to teach me how to play this game. I would not mind playing with friends. Thanks you for the great drawing!

There was a Netflix documentary about Alpha Go, an artificial intelligence developed by Google’s DeepMind branch who plays against the no1 human player, Lee Sedol. The match, called Google DeepMind Challenge Match lasted for 7 days and 5 games played between Lee and Alpha Go. Alpha Go won the match 4-1.

Interesting article. I have always seen people in movies play this game. They always seemed to be very focused, but hearing that it represents the complexity of life made me realize why. I’ve never played this game before, but it looks really cool. Thank you for sharing.

Great drawing Amy! My dad had Go on his phone. Whenever I tried to play it, I was always so confused — the instructions were in Chinese. I always see this game being played in Chinese movies. I never knew that this game symbolizes the turmoils of life. Keep up the great artwork!

Great article. This game sounds very interesting. Although I have never played this game myself, I have seen multiple people play it before. I also have seen this game played in movies and it is intriguing me to play! Since the instructions were in Chinese I had some trouble understanding how to play. I will definitely play this game soon, great article!

feel like I have heard of this game before, except I never really looked into it or never played it. It kind of reminds of the confusing version of chess, because the objective is to capture the king surrounding it. I want to learn how to play this game! Wonderful drawing!

I’ve seen this game before! I think it’s on GamePigeon but I had never known how to play the game. It looks similar to chinese chess or maybe checkers. I really like how you added details to the shading and the background gives a really nice contrast to the darker board. Keep up the art!

I remember watching my older cousins playing this game when we gathered in our grandma’s house during Moon Festival. Until the 2000’s, weiqi was a very popular thing in Korea. Whenever national weiqi competitions began, almost everyone watched the tournament and the winner was as famous as celebrities. A lot of academies for weiqi was established and almost all elementary kids went there to learn how to play weiqi. I didn’t know that this game was invented over 2500 years ago, especially considering the fact that weiqi is still loved by so many people. This game is also on GamePigeon but I’ve never played it, maybe I should give it a try!

Although I have often heard of this game from many people, i have never seen or experienced this game. However, these game pieces remind me of another Chinese game that I do know how to play: 五子棋. In that game, the goal is to connect five of you pieces in a row. I guess that’s basically tic tac toe, but with five in a row rather than three. Thanks for sharing this game with us Amy, I would love to try this out someday!
