Jericho’s Chinese New Year Celebration

On February 5th, Jericho High School was fortunate enough to hold a Chinese New Year celebration. Our Chinese Honor Society presidents, Maya Yu and Wesley Pergament introduced each act that was representative of Chinese culture.

The first act was 武术 (Wǔshù) or traditional martial arts. Here, students utilized swords and did mind-blowing feats such as aerials and splits.

The second was the lion dance performance. For millennia, lions have been representative of power, wisdom, and good fortune. Furthermore, they have been thought to chase away evil spirits and bring luck to the new year.

The third act was a song and dance performed by Mrs. Song’s students from Chinese 3. While one student rapped, many others sang and danced to 听妈妈的话 by Jay Chou, a Chinese pop sensation.

The next performance was a traditional ribbon dance by Juniors Tiffany Bao and Elisa Ng. This duo made sharp, rhythmic movements with colorful ribbons to traditional Chinese music.

The fifth act was a contemporary dance performance by Mrs. Corbett’s dance class. Here, a myriad of dancers moved in sync to popular songs.

Lastly, to sum up, the celebration, Wesley Wang a sophomore sang “Imagine” by John Lennon, with piano and violin accompaniment from Morgan Park and Andrew Cheung.
