New York’s Chinatown

If you live in a major city, you’ve probably been to or at least heard of Chinatown. The Chinatown of New York is the largest one in the United States. It spans two square miles! Here is some information on one of New York’s most famous places!

History:
The first Chinatown in America is actually in San Francisco. In the mid 1800s, there was a large number of Chinese people coming to America in search of work and a better life. Many first settled in California for two reasons: the Gold Rush and Railroad building. As the Gold Rush began to decline and railroad jobs were becoming more and more scarce, many Chinese immigrants headed further east in search of work. Man came to New York. It is here that they made Chinatown.

Restaurants:
Of course, when you go to Chinatown you have to try some Chinese food. Chinatown has a huge variety of restaurants serving all different kinds of food. There are a number of different Dim Sum restaurants, bakeries, noodle shops, and so much more. Not only that, if you are not in the mood to sit down and eat, there are many food carts on street corners for a quick bite!

Holidays:
Another great time to visit Chinatown is during the holidays! During Chinese New Year, there is a huge street festival filled with dragon dances, games, martial arts demonstrations and more! During the Dragon Boat Festival there are dancing acts, percussion marches, and gift kiosks all around!

I hope this article inspired you to visit Chinatown and experience all the wonders it has to offer. Until next time, 再见!

I thought this article was very interesting. I knew that there was a China town in NY but I didn’t know there were even more. The history section was very interesting as well because I never knew the first ones were in LA. After reading this I want to visit. Great Job Jason.

I travel to China town very often because I have family that live there. I always celebrate Chinese New Year with them in China town. During that time of year, China town is definitely breathe taking with all the red decorations and confetti on the streets. I always loved watching the lion dances on the streets, as a child, I found them fascinating. I do know a lot about the modern China town, however, I did not know that the first China town was actually in San Francisco! I will be sure to check out the links to see if there are any good places to visit while I’m in China town next time I visit.

I go to the Chinatown in flushing super often so I know all the places by heart! However, I barely visit the Chinatown in manhattan. Whenever I do, it’s always around Chinese New Year, and the decorations are beautiful. I love how this article also provides information about chinatown’s history. Keep up the good work!

Great article, Jason! I’ve only been to china town a few times, but I haven’t really experience all there is to do in china town. This article will come in handy! I can’t wait to try out some of these restaurants and see some of the festivals! I had no clue that china town originated in California, so interesting! I would also like to go during the holiday season because of all the festivals and street parades, it sounds like so much fun! Thank you so much for sharing!

Great article. I travel to China town very frequently because it is so interesting to see the cultural diversity. I have never been to China before so China town provides a great look into the Chinese culture. I love going to China town because it is so loud and lively. The bright lights, crowded streets, and lion dancers are so entertaining. I will definitely have a different outlook on China town the next time I visit after learning all of these amazing facts.

Jason, this was a very well written article! In the past I have been to china town and walked around. However, I have not experienced it all. The decoration is beautiful and necessary to Chinese culture. Going to chinatown during a festival or holiday would sure be a great experience. This article included many good elements. Thank you for sharing.

This is such a cool article! I used to visit China Town as a child due to my Grandma’s jewelry place. I’ve only had one Chinese New Year at China Town. It was very festive with colors of red everywhere. I also saw dragons and such and had a lot of tasty food. Thanks so much.

Another great article! Surprisingly I’ve never been to any china towns before. I’ve been to China to though before so I’m eager to see the difference between the two. Maybe when I go visit I’ll use this article to help me out! Thank you for the article!

Cool article Jason! I’ve been to Chinatown before. It’s full of restaurants that all look amazing. I also find the history of Chinatown interesting. I can’t wait to go to Chinatown during Chinese New Year. I can’t wait to see the dragon parade when I go there.

Nice article, Jason! I don’t go to Chinatown very often, and even if I go, it would be because of my relative’s wedding. Chinatown is a very crowded place, and it’s pretty hard to get to places. I really want to go to Chinatown and try out all the foods. I think I might go to Chinatown during the break, just to walk around.

  12. Maya Yu

Great article, Jason! I’ve been to New York’s Chinatown, but I prefer Flushing. I think Flushing has more variety in terms of food and cuisines. However, I find the history of Chinatown interesting — the influx of Chinese immigrants created the historic city of Chinatown. I can’t wait to visit Chinatown again and eat at traditional restaurants! Keep up the great work Jason, your articles are always a great read!

Cool article Jason! I have never been to China town before. I have passed by it and saw that it was crowded. I have always wanted to experience walking around the town. If I ever visit I will use this article to help me.

I didn’t know that the first Chinatown was in San Francisco. I learned a lot about holidays in Chinatown. I’ve never been there during the holidays, but now I want to check it out. I didn’t know that the entire Chinatown celebrated the holidays. I thought that most stores would decorate for the holidays, but I didn’t think that there would be dragon dances and martial arts demonstrations. Great article!

Although I have never visited Chinatown before, this article makes me want to go. Similarly to what I learned in AP US History, Chinatown indeed originated in San Francisco. I think it was amazing that chinese people can incorporate their culture with America. Also, it gives immigrants from China a familiar place. Thanks for sharing!

  16. Dylan Swickle

Great article, Jason. I have only been to Chinatown in New York once, and I did not really know much about it. I never knew that the first Chinatown was in San Francisco. I would love to go to Chinatown to try out some different restaurants because I have heard that the food there is very delicious. It would also be very interesting to see the different festivals there.

  17. Jye Shang

Really nice article Jason. I constantly go to Chinatown but I never knew about the history of it. I never knew that the mass of Chinese immigrants made this beautiful city. I really hope to celebrate Chinese new year at china town next time. This was a really great article.

Great article Jason! I´ve been to the Chinatown in NY a lot of times, and like the way you described the eating experience. The restaurants there are very authentic, and me and my family love eating there. I´ve also been to some of the events in Chinatown, like Chinese New Year, and the experience was amazing. Maybe our class could go to Chinatown next year. Thanks again for writing about this important Chinese cultural place.

  19. Dillon Jia

Great article Jason! I’ve been to Chinatown many times. The information you provide us is verifiable. I did not know that the first Chinatown was in San Francisco. Although I haven’t been there during Chinese New Year, I will go there this year. The restaurants are very good. Great job!

  20. Tyler Lin

Great article! I’ve been to Chinatown many times before. But lately, I haven’t been there in so long. This seems very interesting since I went there about 5 years ago. Thanks for creating this article!

Great job Jason. I haven’t been to china town yet but the information provided me intrigued me to go their. When I lived at LA I went to San Francisco’s China Town 3 times a year. It was crazy and beautiful their. Chinatown is very crowded but an amazing place to go to.

  22. Claire Ma

Interesting article! I used to go to the Chinatown in San Fransisco a lot and I thought it was really cool to see the one in New York when I moved to Jericho. Chinatown has a lot of different foods to try and especially during Chinese New year when there is a lot of people. My favorite places in Chinatown are Dim Sum restaurants and bakeries, but the street food is also really good. Chinatown gets really festive during Chinese New Year, and you can see a lot of dragon dances in the streets. Hopefully, I can go to Chinatown soon and eat at the restaurant since Chinese New year is coming up!

  23. Ria Bhasin

Awesome article. I defiantly want to go to Chinatown when the dragon boat festival occurs. There is so much to see, like dancing acts and percussion marches. I have gone to Chinatown a few times. I love going because their decorations are so cool and the food is very different.

I used to visit China Town very often to buy 小笼包 from this very hidden store. I always buy them in bulk because it is cheaper that way but they are also very delicious. China Town is always busy and loud and that’s what makes it so great. The decorations in China Town around the time of Lunar New Year are breathtaking. They really make you feel festive. I definitely want to visit the China Town in San Francisco when I ever have a chance to. Thanks for the article!

  25. Ryan Lam

This is a very interesting article. Even though I’m Chinese and go to Chinatown all the time, I’ve never known its history. I always thought the one in New York was the first Chinatown. However, I’ve never been in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, but it sounds like fun. Too bad I don’t like Chinese food. Also, I appreciate the sources you added for us to look further into Chinatown.

  26. Joshua Dong

I’ve literally been to China town every weekend of my life. It’s cool that I’m learning even more from this article and I think my parents might benefit from reading this. Both my Grandma and grandpa live in China town and I visit them often. Although the place doesn’t smell that good, the sights are amazing around holiday times. The food there is also not bad and the people there are sometimes nice. Keep writing more articles about places!

  27. Ethan Wang

I’ve been to Chinatown so many times. I have never bothered to think about the history behind Chinatown. I will probably visit some of the popular attractions. At some restaurants, the food is okay good. Keep up the good work.

This article provides a lot of information about China town. I like how you talked about the creation of China town and where it started which was San Francisco. When I walk in China town it’s like a whole other world and really captivates Chinese culture. More information that I learned was that Chinatown centered on Grant Avenue and Stockton Street in San Francisco, California, (Chinese: 唐人街; pinyin: tángrénjiē; Jyutping: tong4 jan4 gaai1) is the oldest Chinatown in North America and the largest Chinese enclave outside Asia. It is the oldest of the four notable Chinatowns in the city. Since its establishment in 1848, it has been highly important and influential in the history

This was a very informative and entertaining article, as even though I had visited Chinatown many times, this article gave me a lot of information. I especially liked the history of Chinatown section, as I never knew that people traveled to Chinatown because of the Gold Rush. I agree that the restaurants in Chinatown that serve authentic Chinese food are very tasty, and are an important aspect of Chinatown. Thank you for including many different pictures about Chinatown, as it helped me to truly see what you mentioned in your article in a new light. Overall, this was an article I especially liked because it was packed with information about China’s history and holidays.

  32. Wesley Wang

Great informative article. I’ve been to Chinatown at least a thousand times, but never knew the history behind it. It’s interesting that many Chinese immigrants were originally here in America because of the Gold Rush, but after its decline, they immigrated East to New York. I love the food especially in Chinatown, as it is as close as it gets to real Chinese food. It’s nice how you also included a “things-to-do” in Chinatown link. Thanks!

  33. Michael P.

Wow Jason, what a great read. I was very surprised to hear that the Chinatown in New York is the biggest Chinatown in the US. I thought that San Francisco Chinatown would be the biggest one. I also like how you incorporated the history of Asian-Americans by detailing that they first came to San Francisco for the gold rush and for railroad building opportunities and then branched out east. Hearing your descriptions of Chinatown street food, reminded me of when I had street food in Muslim Square, Xi’an-it was so delicious! Maybe I will check out the martial arts displays and dragon dances in NYC this Chinese New Year. Keep up the great work!

  34. Lucy Cao

Thanks for sharing this article! It’s interesting to see how Chinese culture was brought to the U.S. I also really enjoy going to Chinatown because there is always so much to see and do. It’s also interesting to see how the Chinatown in San Francisco and in New York are connected. It shows that Chinese people place a lot of importance on their culture, and bring it everywhere they go.

Great article Jason! It was interesting to learn that San Franciso is home to the very first Chinatown! I love visiting Chinatown during Chinese New Year because I truly feel immersed in Chinese culture. Of course, when you’re in Chinatown, you must try the food! In my opinion, Chinatown has the best and most authentic food available in the US. Overall, this article was very informative and thanks for sharing your work!

I have always driven past Chinatown but I have never actually been there. I had no idea that the first Chinatown originated in San Francisco! I am going to check out Chinatown during the holidays to get a gist of how they celebrate their holidays. Interesting article, thanks for sharing!

Every few months my family goes to Chinatown different supermarkets and food types that we aren’t able to get on Long Island. I didn’t know that it was because of decreasing job opportunities that the Chinese people came to New York to establish another Chinatown. Recently, I had seen the red lanterns and decorations in the shops. I remember looking at the red covering the lamp posts and the shops. I can’t wait to go back soon!

  39. Brandon Wong

Great Article! Before I read this article, I never knew the history of New York’s Chinatown. I also never knew that the first Chinatown in America was in San Francisco. Also, good job for saying they were there to mine gold, now I understand! However, I did know that they celebrate holidays with grand festivals on the streets with many visuals to see. Also, I have been to many bakeries and restaurants in Chinatown but i have not seen all of them.

Thank you for describing the history of China town to the readers! I have been China town many times before! Some of my favorite restaurants are from Chinese town. I didn’t know that the first Chinatown originated at Chicago. Now that I know there are holiday celebrations in Chinatown, I might head out and see a few!
