The Great LOL of China

If you haven’t heard of the Great LOL of China, you have to check it out! The Great LOL of China is a video series created by Jesse Appell.  His videos explore Chinese language and culture in a humorous and satirical way. What I find the most interesting about his videos is that they allow you to see and explore modern Chinese culture and society from the perspective of a foreigner.  Something that you may not see often is a foreigner who not only can speak fluent Chinese, but is so literate in the culture and traditions of the country.  Jesse is able to use his excellent Chinese language skills and knowledge of Chinese culture to bring his videos to life.  And he does so in such a hilarious way!

The series is found on Asia Society’s website. For those of you who do not know, Asia Society is a non-profit organization whose goal is to educate and inform the world about Asia. They also aim to promote collaboration and partnerships between different people, organizations, and groups from Asia and the United States. The Great LOL of China is found on their China Learning Initiatives page!

Each episode of the series includes a summary explaining the background and cultural significance of the video.  For example, Episode 1 explores dating and relationships and China.  What is great about Jesse’s videos is that they are not only culturally significant, they are really funny! There is a total of 12 videos in his series: The Great LOL of China.  If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend it! The link to his videos are down below! Until next time, 再见!

years now, but never had any real world experience. I think that watching this series could possibly help me learn Chinese. I also really like the use of humor in learning and I think it makes it a lot more engaging. Great article Jason Suh!

Awesome article! I never knew that Asia Society is a non-profit organization whose goal is to educate and inform the world about Asia. I saw the video, and it was great! I think that learning should be made more like this. Students don’t concentrate, focus, or find learning new things interesting unless it is made fun. Thanks for the information!

I probrably think the the name of this series is a pun on The Great Wall of China. It’s very smart that they can teach Chinese culture and language through humor. If this series becomes very popular by the Honor Society, I bet it would be even shown on real TV! However, the series may not have in depth learning because of its jokes. But anyways, thank you for writing about this new series!

Great article, Jason. I found his videos to be very enjoyable and funny too. I find it very interesting that, even though he is from a totally different country, he is able to speak the language to such a great degree of fluidity that he sounds like a local. I like the comedic approach that Jesse takes to towards the Chinese culture.

The is something new to see. In this series its interesting to know Chinese culture through use of humor. The series should hopefully become popular and it should be posted on TV. Next time, they should make more videos like these, except that they should focus on different subjects like math and science! Thank you for making this!

I enjoyed reading this article thoroughly. From the lecture in our Chinese IV class about Mr. Appell, we were able to understand that he represents and feels close to a very distinct culture and type of lifestyle. I value this passion and vigor, and am very curious as to where this will go to next. I very much enjoyed his films as well, providing more of an accessible face to Chinese culture. Thank you for sharing, Jason.

I found this personally very weird and painful to watch. Not that the show was bad it just wasn’t my sense of humor. I didn’t like how the guy was being willfully ignorant about how he looked in public.

  24. Jye Shang

Wow! I remember watching this in class! I have never heard of this show before up until we watched it in class. I thought it was pretty hilarious and was a great way to expose people to the language and culture. Wow, cool article! I’ve always thought about how a foreigner views a culture. This is because I’ve never been in a place where the culture is different from where it is in America. I’ve never watched Jesse’s videos on my own time yet. However, I make sure that I will. I can’t wait to check him out! Thanks for the article!

  31. Michael P.

Great article, Jason. I remember when Ms. Song showed us his videos in class. I remember being so very impressed with his accurate pronunciations. I aspire to be able to speak Chinese like him one day. However, as for his videos, I found the humor to be a little crude and childish. However, I did laugh at some parts like the video about dating. I think that the Asia Society is a great organization, and I am so glad that they promote cross-cultural learning. Thank you once again Jason!
